Hi there from NZ
Hi There,
GJ here from Wellington NZ. I'm a newbie. I've had a RHD 1984 C10 LWB Fleetside for 2 years now. It along with a few others was sent over to NZ in a crate and assembled over here brand new all those years ago. Must have been part of a deal that NZ government did with the US Government. Just purchased a '63 from Elkhart, Indiana in February and it's due to arrive here on 21st May. Some of you will recognise it! Looking forward to learning lot's from you hardcore truck guys through the forums. Cheers GJ[IMG][/IMG] Last edited by GJ63; 04-29-2010 at 04:25 PM. Reason: Add photo of my Square Body |

Re: Hi there from NZ
Welcome GJ !!
GJ bought my 63 from the guy I sold it to a while back. He just happened to see the YouTube video I did of this truck, and contacted me. It really is a "small world."

Re: Hi there from NZ
WELCOME to a place I hope you enjoy as much as I do.
It`s a small world but I wouldn`t want to walk it! I think it`s great how folks so far away can appreciate these wonderful wonders on wheels.I wonder if my fellow Americans think to appreciate what it takes for people like you just to have one.Even the exports already there are now not so easy to keep up and running. Here in the states a GM is about the easiest vehicle to get parts for,as well as cheapest. They were always the workin`man`s ride and that`s one reason I fell in live with them. I am jealous knowing the roads you travel in these trucks. What a beautiful land you live in.I think NZ has everything I`d ever want in topography and all within reach from wherever you live there.That`84 would drive folks wild back here with the RH drive.

Re: Hi there from NZ
Thanks for the welcome messages
Bill, thanks for posting the photograph of the '63 and thanks for putting me onto the 'network'. Not hard to see why I (and my significant other yes thats right the good lady loves it too) fell for this truck! It was a surreal moment when one night last week I was trawling youtube and I spotted Bill's video. I think I woke the house up. Can't wait to see it in the flesh for sure. People do love my '84 but they are going to flip over the new old one! For those that are interested getting one of these beasts across to NZ is made easier if you use an agent that understands the process at both ends. I have used a fellow Kiwi, Steve Curle who runs Kiwi Shipping. Steve is US based and is used by many of us to get specialist cars and parts across to NZ. He is a great guy. I have to say that with a total of 4 million kiwis we all tend to stick together! Anyway Steve picked the '63 up from Elkhart for me, prepped it for travel, packed it and the parts I ordered for both trucks into a container along with with a 55 chev for another guy down here and did all the necessary paperwork. So around the 21st of May we expect the ship to drive past and we will scream down to the wharf to pick it up. I will take a camera as some of you might be interested in seeing how they pack these It takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 weeks depending on the route you chose and where you want it to end up. I chose the 6 week option as the ship drops it off on my doorstep. Next time I might go via Auckland and it will arrive in around 2 weeks. I won't go into the certification process but suffice to say there are several hoops and a few dollars plus some work to ensure that NZ safety standards are complied with. We have a 6 monthly safety inspection that has checks road worthiness including rust, tyre condition, exhaust, glass, seatbelts, odometer, brakes, lighting. The cost to ship this time for me was around $1500usd (our exchange rate is approx 0.71c). On top is GST (goods and services tax) care of the government down here that we pay on arrival. Steve made it very easy and was incredibly tolerant of the out of normal time zone calls. The roads over here generally are just two lanes, one in each direction and pretty narrow. Makes for some interesting passing in a LHD vehicle on RHD roads. They are all pretty narrow here too. We do have what we call motorways (2 to 3 lanes) but these tend to be in the main cities. I really enjoy driving your freeways. We have family over in the US around San Diego and Temecula and we get over every year or so to catch up and the driving is a highlight. Our speed limit is 100 kph and 50 kph in built up areas so the opportunity to put foot to floor is relished. Last time I was there I drove an H2 and doing 90 (ok so my mother in law was in the back seat) on the freeway and got passed like I was standing still by a guy on a big Japanese sports bike on his back wheel! I'll close off by saying if you guys are selling trucks on ebay please click the 'will sell worldwide'. there are buyers down here looking. My Thanks again for the warm welcome and I look forward to learning lots off you guys. Cheers GJ |
