ford 9 in info needed

Trying to find a ford 9 in. for my truck,454 475 hp.so I can change gears when needed.I found one that is possibly from a 73 and later car[t-bird or lincoln not sure] but from what I,m can find find is these have a tapered axle or tube,not good for shortening.I don,t want to shortenin it,is a good width for me.So my ? is, is this a rearend I should take or is this style rear a weak unit that can,t be helped without lottsa $

sorry, but rearend is not where I am,is from a friend of a friend who saves ford 9 in. so I have to go buy hearsay

One thing that they are not is weak. If it is out of a small block car, then it has 28 spline axles. Which are fine with street tires. BBF cars had 31 splines and factory posi's. Lincolns and T-birds are already quite short around 50" if I remember correctly. I put one in a foxbody I had without cutting a thing.

Motor only:
6.44 1/8 @ 104.13
10.39 1/4 @ 125.83

Nitrous Times:
5.785 1/8 @ 118.65 with a 1.336 60ft
9.168 1/4 @ 142.58 with a 250 shot dead out of the hole!

Do some research and be CERTAIN. There are ford 8.8" rears that 'appear' to be the same as a 9" but not. How to tell and what exactly to look for I can't help. just to offer that word of caution.

Ya know if you look at the cost of a new housing, fitted with the housing ends for big axles, ordering new axles, a locker, gears, and everything. You might be better off doing this from scratch. 'Stock' 9" parts are pretty strong, but not anything indestructible for sure. Even aftermarket Pro center-sections, 40 spline axles, and Richmond gears can go away with enough abuse. I just threw away a Richmond 5.43 ring and pinion that lost some teeth with a 12 second truck launching off a transbrake.

It is a 9 inch and is from a running car all in good shape [we,ll see]for 200.00,At least I can put on the bench and take my time

Find out what motor was in that car originally. It will tell you alot about that rearend before you break it open. You have 3 different bearing sizes on the carriers. 2.80 which is low performance apps. 3.06 bearing which was in most trucks, 3.250 bearing which is the bigboy and is for the high performance apps. You can change any 9 inch housing to hold whatever carrier you want, but it is nice to have the good stuff already....

Well you would have one of the first off the assembly line, thats for sure.

Alot has changed in 60 years, but If the posi is in good shape it would probably handle 450hp all day long.
