1986 gmc swb 8 inch lift question?
I have a 1986 gmc swb with a turbo 350 and np203 t case and was wondering if stock drive shafts could be used with an 8 inch suspension lift? Tell me what your experiences with this are and if it can be done.. Thanks guys

no experience but I doubt it... I've always heard that 6" or more usually requires driveshaft work and/or axle or transfer case clocking....

msgross is right, the CV joint will not travel far enough to meet the front differential. The whole shaft is not long enough anyway, so you will need a driveline shop to help you out with this one. The rear will need to be longer too, but the joint angle will not be a problem, since it is quite a bit longer.

Yea you will need to run longer drive shafts go talk to a drive line shop about this. Usually anything over 4" of lift and they need to change sometimes 6" if your lucky. I would get rid of that 203 if your gonna run big tires buddy!

I didn't even notice this the first time...Is this some kind of swap? because that is not what should be in there. It really should be an NP208. Those "full time" NP203s were phased out before '86.

Re: 1986 gmc swb 8 inch lift question?
Sorry for not replying back ive been really buisy. yes you are correct it shouldnt have a 203 or a turbo 350 i put them both in there. I have a 205 to put in it but i just wanted to know if it would work for now with the stock driveshafts and the 203 till i had the money to have drive shafts made. Thanks for the replys I'll be puttin the lift on it by about the middle of next week so i'll just have to figure it out from there. Thanks again for the replys.

My old truck had a 6" lift and the front shaft wouldn't work. Dunno bout the rear, swapped a 14ff the same time I lifted it.

Re: 1986 gmc swb 8 inch lift question?
Well i got the 8 inch suspension lift on and it didnt pull the rear drive shaft out as far as i figured it would but it will need to be about 2 and half inches longer. I dont know about the front one yet i havent tried to bolt it on, it was 3 inches to long already so im hoping it will work now.
