Any problems putting an '84 bed on a '73 frame?
Just wanted to make sure...found a deal on an '84 bed in decent shape, but before I checked it out, I wanted to see if there were any complications. It's off a 3/4 ton, same as mine, with two fuel doors (as opposed to caps). Would there be much of a problem making the filler necks match up or any other minor problems?

Swap filler necks and you should be good to go.

What kind of mounting hardware would be suggested? A bed kit for an 81-87 from LMC perhaps?

Just to be sure, you can measure the locations of the bed bolts - front to back - on both trucks. 3/4 tons should match, but I put a 78 LWB 1/2 ton bed on my 73 3/4 ton LWB and not all of the bolts were in the same location.
I had to drill new holes into my 3/4 ton frame to attach the 1/2 ton box. I seem to recall that some of the bolts were different lengths also. Last edited by tucsonjwt; 05-19-2010 at 11:01 PM. |

Re: Any problems putting an '84 bed on a '73 frame?
I just put an 85 1/2 ton bed on my 76 3/4 (now 1/2) ton. Get the filler necks and hoses from the later bed. the only issues I had were the second row of bed bolts from the cab were in different locations and the filler hoses on the 85 bed were larger in diameter than the filler neck on the tank. It was an easy fix tho, just cut a chunk of hose off the 75 filler hose and used it as a bushing for the newer hose, fit like a glove and no leaks. Also save your old tailight harness because at somepoint they changed the ends where they plug into the harness behind the bumper. On the bed bolts, I only used the 6 that lined up with the frame, it isn't really a truck anymore so that should be plenty to keep it from falling off, good luck on the swap!
