Everybody has their own opinion. I just wanted to take a lil poll and see who likes what. Post pics, sizes, and opinions here...

My eyes like wide whites, my wallet likes skinnies. I'm sure you can figure which one my truck is wearing...

Re: 60-66 Wide or Skinny Whites???

For me, on restored vehicles wide whites look correct for anything 1961 and older. To the best of my memory skinny whites were introduced on the 1961 Corvair Monza and were widely referred to as “Monza Whitewalls” for many years after. Lower scale Corvairs and most everything else continued on wide whites throughout the 1961 model year. By 1962 narrow whites were the new industry standard and wide whites quickly fell out of favor. Many added narrow Portawalls to their wide whites to cheaply gain a more modern look. Here's a JC Whitney ad from 1962:

For modified, custom, or slammed trucks it is really what looks best with the combination of wheel selection, tire size, and paint color and layout (dark or light, two tone, etc). I’ve seen Cragars with narrow and wide whites and both look good, same with Radir mags, chrome rims, and wire wheels. If the truck has more of a 50’s theme – like lowered, lake pipes, wheel covers, racing discs, and spotlights – wide whites seem more appropriate. Skinnies seem more suited if it is built in a more modern style – slammed, dechromed, large wheels, etc. One thing that would sway me heavily toward narrow whites is if someone would re-release the U.S. Royal Master narrow whitewalls from the 1960's. They had continuous radial vanes or serrations from the rim to the road edge, broken only by the white stripe. All of the tops show cars used them because of their distinctive and beautiful appearance.

It really comes down to owner preference and the message they want to send about their perspective of what looks good.

No pics right now, but I heavily prefer the classic wide whites. And I love the way they look mounted on a set of Torque Thrusts, I'm thinkin that's what my '65 will be wearing.

Skinny is the way to go for this bodystyle. In my opinion, wide whites rarely look at home on a post 1960ish vehicle.

Re: 60-66 Wide or Skinny Whites???

Some guy on here has/had a gold 64 short step/fleet with wide whites and 17" torq thrusts. I've yet to see a cooler combo.

Wide Whites

Neither! Raised white letters and a set of Corvette Rallies on mine. Just the red neck in me!
