6 to 8 Lug Conversion - Education Needed

Hey guys,

I picked up a full floating 8 lug Dana 60 rear end to put in my '72 K10, and I've been told by a few different people that the stock front axle in this truck can be converted to 8 lug fairly simply by replacing rotors, hubs, etc... Anybody know a complete list of what parts I'll need? Thanks...

Spindles, hubs, and rotors will be needed and can be taken off of any Dana 44 or GM 10 bolt, calipers and lockouts are the same.

That's about what I thought. As to the spindles: are we talking everything outside of the ball joints, or just the horizontal piece that bolts onto the vertical portion?

Everything from spindle (threaded shaft that the wheel bearings ride on) outward. The part that attaches to the ball-joints is called the "Knuckle".

Why must the spindles be swapped on a '72?

When I covered my ’78 from 6 to 8 lugs all I swapped was the backing plates and rotors. I used the same calipers, spindles, wheel bearings, locking hubs….even brake pads. I broke down and got new seals though

It is always good 2 grab them GM used 3 different spindles throughout the years and you never know what ones you need till you have the wrong one.

I did not know there were three. I only know of 2. One for drum brakes and one for disks. I’ve probably had at least 100 of square 4x4’s torn apart over the years and have only 1 spindle used on squares. Maybe there are few others for older trucks.

big and small bearing style I believe... also, the 10-bolts probably have metric banjo bolts on the calipers...

Re: 6 to 8 Lug Conversion - Education Needed

Yes the 10 bolts use metric banjo bolts but the calipers are the same for both the 1/2 and 3/4 unless the truck had J code brakes. The trucks with J code brakes had larger diameter pistons (the physical size of the calipers are the same) and ran a Hydro-Boost master cylinder. I am curently running a Dana 60 front and 14 bolt rear and both are equiped with J code front calipers for a 3/4 ton 82 K20.
