Has anyone ever rebuilt a power steering box? I got a lot of play in the steering wheel.

I think they can be adjusted, not sure though...

I was thinking about it but I learned that it's more trouble that it's worth. You sure the play is in the box?

I really think that they cannot be rebuilt buy a person without a massive workshop & specialty tools - Mine was just replaced last year - it started leaking from the shaft seal. I just ended up buying a rebuild one for around $60. You need to change the hoses out when you get a new pump. A new one cost $250!!! Ouch!

Edit: Uhh... nevermind the above - I was talking about the pump. I don't know about the box!

You really only need to change the pressure side hose - just a good preventive measure!

i was told that adjusting the box won't fix the amount of play I have. I already replaced half the front end.

an old gear box that is badly worn will ABSOLUTELY affect you steering. other factors that are just as important:

a-arm bushings
inner tie rods
outer tie rods
pitman arm
idler arm
ball joints
rag joint
power steering pump/belt/hoses.

the steering system is pretty much all inclusive. if anything fails, it will cause others to fail prematurely. domino effect almost.
if in doubt, replace parts. better safe than sorry.

I'll have to go back to the previous owners receipts(dad,mom)and see what they did.

uh, no... none of those items will effect the play in the steering system in any way. they will however create more effort required to turn.

there is a brass bushing were the shaft comes out of the bottom , it were's out over time . you cant adjust the worm gear to compinsate either.They sell rebuild kits , but I have never attempted this.
