Clanking noise?

Hey all,

I finally got my truck on the road (after 5 grand worth of fix up) and i finally got it offroad. It was basically a gravel road and i had it in 4LO because i was some steep wet dirt/gravel. Anyways as i got it over 10kmh (20mph to americans?) a clanking noise started coming from the front right? I just got new ball joints and U joints put in and a few other things (4 grand) so i was thinking it should be everything but the U joints but what else could it be? It only happened in 4WD.

Help?

Re: Clank noise?

Sounds like the u-joint.Maybe your expensive mechanic put it together wrong.I`ve seen them grenade as soon as they were engaged into 4wd.The u-joint "must" be centered between the ball joints on the vertical plain.I`ve seen many front ends put together with the bronze spacer installed out at the axle end at the snap ring when it belongs the first thing on the outer stub behind the spindle. That 3/16" or so is enough to put the pivot of the u-joint off-plain with the knuckle pivot causing a bind that no u-joint can handle.Instant breakage as soon as you use 4wd.

Re: Clank noise?

Merged, please don't do this. Place your question one time in one place, if you feel it would be better somewhere else a Moderator can move it for you.

Re: Clanking noise?

Hey all,

It has 33's and no lift....its a clanking noise like someone taking a chain and twirling it while clipping the ground....my friend walked beside it and said its definately the right from...couldnt feel it through the steering wheel and i looked at the joints afterwords and there seems to be no obvious signs of damage

Re: Clanking noise?

im just curious though as to what happens if you go too fast in 4lo? I was only in 2nd at like 2500rpm?

Also what happens if you drive on a flat paved road in 4x4? Ive never done it but it says not too so im just curious

Re: Clanking noise?

You can go as fast in 4lo as your motor can handle. It just revs up there quicker.I drive 3,000 rpm down the hiway everyday.

Driving on dry pavement puts more stress on things due to no slippage. If you hit the throttle hard with the front wheels turned sharp could easily find the weak link and break something in the front end.Doing the same going straight isn`t doing the drivetrain any favors from front to back. You can drive all day long on dry roads in 4wd and not hurt a thing. It depends on if you put unreasonable stress on the drivetrain.

Re: Clanking noise?

Do you have 4wd?If one lock-out is messed up neither wheel will spin.

One problem with that theory.......If you have a D44/12bolt truck, the gears might not be a 100% match in both axles. The GM 12 bolt can have a 3.08:1 ratio and the D44 will be 3.07:1

I have had some occasions to end up in 4 on dry pavement and it wasn't pretty.
