Tightening Powersteering Belt???

I just put new v-belts on my truck but could not really tighten the power steering belt. I couldnt really get a hold of it to tighten it? I was thinking about putting a pry bar b/w the pump and bracket and pulling on it but I though that would damage the pump. Any advice on how to do this? Thanks

You will damage the case if you pry on the tin part. What I do is install a 1" long 3/8" threaded bolt into the front of the pump, (the cast part) and then insert a long screw driver between the bolt and the casting nose. That way when you pry on the bolt you will not damage anything.

I can do a pic if you like.

Here is the pic, hopefully you can see what I have set up. I used a 3/8" bolt to screw into the front of the casting 1" long. If you have a 3/4" long bolt, it might be easier, just turn it in for approximately 3 turns.

You need leverage, however you decide to get it...but you need it bad. It's always a two-man job on my truck.

You are right about the leverage! The screw driver under the bolt in the pic is about two feet long and is easily held with the left hand while you tighten the rear nut with the right hand. On my own truck, I tightened the bolt up, so that it stays there, (can't take a chance on it falling out).
