1968 Big Block trucks - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Any of you guys out there that have factory original Big Block trucks, please tell me if your truck had the exhaust heat sheild under the hood, the one that mounts down low on the pass side fire wall/floor board.

My truck is an original 1968 BB truck and it does not have it, did the first year "1968" bb trucks have this, or did it come on the later years only.

I might be wrong and most likely I am...but I think it was 1971 when the Heat Shields were used. I think it was to protect the starter from getting to hot.

I have a 70 GMC 402 BB original and I dont remember seeing one on my rig when I did the tear down. But the PO may have removed it.

My 70cst is a numbers matching BB and it doesn't have a heat shield. Although it might have been removed at some time in its former life.

Hey, thanks you guys for the quick response.
But now, If the heat sheild had been removed by someone, there will still be the 2 holes there where it had been mounted or at lest the 2 screws in the holes.
My truck does not even have the holes, I think that 70cst may be right about it starting in 1971.
Both my 1971 & my 1972 BB trucks had the sheilds

The 396 was earlier than 71-72.

My 70 has a 402.

both my 68 big blocks don't have the shield. My GMC had headers when I bought it from the PO. My chevy had a small block where the big block previously was.

I think in 69 one could get the 396. Then is 70 it went from a 396 to a 402. I think.

The first year for Big Blocks in our trucks was 1968 the engine was the 396,
in 1970 it was bored out to 402.
1973 was the first year for the 454 in light duty trucks

My 70 has dimpls for drilling holes in the correct spot.

I have one I just dont want to install it if it's not factory correct for 1968.
I want my restoration as close to original as can be.

That's the direction that I am going except I did up grade to disc brakes for driveability issues. I added am/fm which wasn't avaliable until 71 I believe. I also added a tillt. Otherwise it is fairly close to stock. Oh yes...I changed the shoes to TT II's.

Burb 71,

Yes this is a complete original 70 bbc swb truck, still original paint truck. When i bought it, it was last tagged in 81.
