I have searched the internet and have come up short.

I would like to find an online calculator that would help me determine what width of tire (maximum and minimum width) I could put on an 18" x 9 1/2" rim.
Anyone know of such a calculator?

You might want to contact Bill , mtltire@gmail.com. Set me up with tires on my truck. We tried on several different sizes till I was happy with the way it looked.

The rim widths acceptable for different size tires is determined by the Tire and Rim Association, the US standards organization for tires, run by the tire companies. For online access there is a rather large subscription fee. They also publish a year book with all the latest info. I have a copy so if you let me know the tire sizes I can look up the approved rim widths.

Yeah, you kinda have to work backwards. Plug in 295/45 18 and it will say the width needs to be 9.5 to 11...or 275/55 is 7.5 to 9.5....or 35x12.50r18 needs 8.5 to 11 inches.

I was assuming you have the wheels, next would be to determine what profile you want (say 45's or 55's...or side wall height) and then try the different section widths available in that diameter and aspect ratio.

I am looking at buying a set of 18" x 9.5" rims. I would like a tall sidewall for front and rear, but not too tall, and I would like a wide footprint for the rear.
I do not want them lip of the rim to protrude farther than the sidewall of the tire.

The miata calculator in post #4 has been helpful when I compare my current 295/50/15 rear tires to 18" tires. I can figure out many parameters with that.

check out 255x50x18s you will get a profile that has about a 4.5 side wall not a oring look rear 245x50x18 front check them out first

TR65 - I'm interested if you've got the time to check. Am interested in 225 and 235 / both 70 and 75 series (i.e. 4 combos). My assumption is the 225 MIGHT fit on a stock 66 rim (5.5 in width, I think) but that the 235's will need a 6 inch rim minimum. I guess the one I'm really interested in is 225/75/15 on stock 66 C10 rim - 5.5 in. Thanks, appreciate your time.

Jocko,

The book agrees with Hoog for the 235/70 and 235/75 - approved range 6"-8".

The book says for the 225/70 and 225/75 the approved range is 6"-7.5".

Wider is usually better but if you go too wide they can be hard to seat and sometimes hard to seal.

Thanks TR65 and Hoog - Have had several notes from folks that easily ran a 225/75 on a 5.5 inch stock rim - so I think that is the direction I'm gonna go - although still a little nervous about going slightly wider than recommended for a 5.5 inch rim. Seems the taller sidewall of a 75 might give a little flexibility to put a wider tire on a slightly narrower than recommended rim. Thank all for the help, much appreciated - and the pics really help out.
