Replace Oil Dipstick Tube

Hi everyone - maybe a nooB question here, but I'm wondering about replacing the oil dipstick tube on a 1970 307 - driver's side tube mount. My original tube is in the attachments - it was broken when I bought the truck. I pulled the tube mount (the shorter section) out of the oil pan with needlenose pliers. If I get a replacement tube, should I seal it in the oil pan with anything or just jam it in there? Thanks for the help!

Re: Replace Oil Dipstick Tube

It should come with a rubber O ring which is enough to keep it from leaking and as long as the tube is mounted to the block at the top, your good to go.

Edit: I was thinking of the trans tube, it has the rubber O ring. The tube for the engine just wedges in there, it does on mine anyway.

Re: Replace Oil Dipstick Tube

Welcome to the 67-72 Chevy Trucks web site from West Michigan!

All of the short tubes that I have seen have been straight and they go through the block into the oil pan. The part that is above the block is driven in and I use a sealer, ( Permatex #2) or similar. (I was not sure if you had posted a picture of the short tube or the tube that is above).

Good deal, that should be easy once I get the replacement....

Thanks for the quick responses, guys - love that about the board.

Jim, I believe the tube in the picture used to be one piece, and when I bought the truck, it was already busted. I had to chip off a bunch of bondo or some kind of sealant that was holding the shorter bit in the oil pan opening.

Do you guys have recommendations for replacements? I've seen posts that say genuine GM fits better than most...? Thanks again!

You can probably get one from a local junkyard for next to nothing.

There's a 69 in the local yard that I tried to pull but couldn't remove the tube. Not sure if it was sealed in there with something or what. Maybe I'll give it another go before dropping $10 on a replacement!
