Trans fluid
I've got a '68 c10, with a 3spd muncie, and it's about to be ready for the road. So I figured it might need the tranny fluid changed, so what kind do I use and how do I do it? I've never done this before and I think it's alittle bit harder since it's a manual. Thanks Yall.

Re: Trans fluid
For a manual transmission use SAE 80W-90 GL-5 gear lubricant. Get a gallon of this with a pump. Then you can do your rearend, too (posi additive needed if limited slip).
Pull the drain plug and let drain for about 15 min.. Repalce the drain plug. Remove the fill level plug (usually about half way up on the casting) and add lubricant through the level hole until it seeps from the level hole. Replace fill plug. It's not a little bit harder, it's much easier. A good service manual will tell you this and more. Well worth it's price. Last edited by Notrodder; 08-10-2010 at 04:01 PM. |

Re: Trans fluid
ooops.....i didn't use 80/90 gear oil in the saginaw on my 72 burb c20. i used royal purple manual trans fluid. i did put r/p 75w-90 in the eaton rear when i swapped from a 4.57 to 4.10 gear. i haven't had any issues (yet) and the trans has well over 1,000 miles on it since the fluid change.

Re: Trans fluid
I could only guess at the capacity of your transmission, but I'd say 2qts., maybe a little more. If you're tight on cash, get three qts. and if it only takes two return one.
