Any Chevy V8 will fit, Big Block or Small block, from inception to the 2002 models.
An inline6 will also fit. ------------------ Chris Lucas 1973 Chevy C-10 1975 Chevy Silverado Captkaos Customs

What do you have in it right now? For 100% bolt in, you'll wanna stay with a simmilar motor as whats in it now. If you have a small block, you'll want a small block. If you have a big block, you'll be broke, if you have an inline six, you'll be searching for a while.

You'll have a bunch of wires you won't use as a '86 is computer controlled and a '72 isn't. And if emissions is a problem where you are, that will come into play at your next inspection, but yes, it will go in and work.

Yeap, alot of the 81-up trucks and some SW6 HO 305 Firebirds, etc used the EST system, had electonically advanced distributor, knock sensor, etc.
You can run the 72 carb and dizzy on the engine when it goes in the 86, you dont have to use the plugs for the 86 carb or the extra plug for the '86 dizzy, engine wil still run, starting circuit is same. And use the 86 alternator, it will swap on, as will all of the accesory brackets and pulleys. Does the 72 engine stil have the original passenger side alternator set up(if is actually a 72 truck engine) ? Make sure both engines have the 8" diameter torsional dampner(balancer), if not then swap the '86 balancer onto the '72 engine. Even so, the 86 may not even have the EST sytem in it. good luck |

An '86 only has a ECS (Electronic Spark Control) and you should ditch it anyway. '87 was the first year for computer control.
