Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
When I lived in Rockford, IL, I saw this happen a lot with a friends Nova. My suggestion is find a better quality car show to go to. In most cases, the car shows are sponsered by a dealership or something to that effect. So how would it look if it was being sponsered by a Ford dealership and a Chevy won?

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
yea but you cant let it get you down...just clean your ride to the best of your ability and thats all you can do, just remind yourself of why you build stuff, it is so you get enjoyment out of it! if you happen to win something great, if not you still have a good time. every show i go to i get put in an extreme SUV class so i have to compete with every blazer, tahoe, danali, suburban out there and there are alot of new ones at the shows...LOL. i still win stuff though from time to time...

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
never been in a show where they picked the class. they always ask me what class I would like to enter. But, with the smaller local shows that dont have a big turnout, they have alot less classes to choose from. Went to one that had 4 classes: car 1972 & older, car 73 & newer, truck 72 older, truck 73 newer.
what I hate are the big shows (goodguys to name one) that don't allow anything newer than 72 in. THey call them a Classic car show... whatever. I think if your vehicle is old enough to qualify for classic or antique tags, then it would qualify for a classic car show.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I'm glad they are better for it around here. I got a buddy who has a 80's model chevy stepside 4x4, dedicated show truck, and he blows them all out of the water. I love it, guys come in with new bank owned trucks thinking they are hot stuff and get smoked by him everytime. it mostly depends on what the judges are into, some I went to they had young highschool chicks judge and they was into new crap, other times they had older guys there and they liked everything esp. the old stuff.
IMO hit the smaller shows, I always got way up there and good trophies on the small shows, but the large ones I barely placed. Or maybe hit a different town or something. You can't expect to win them all. Just go there having the attitude that you aint gonna win a thing, just here to show off your work and enjoy the show, and you'll probably win something.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I can't tell you how many shows I put my tricked out RS Warrior in and they would pick some new bike that usually had nothing but bolt on chrome on it. Or a Big Dog "Chopper" that still had the paper tag on it. LOL I eventually just quite doing the show thing over it. It would crack me up every time.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
Most smaller car shows run by clubs or dealerships, are biased towards members or brands. My suggestion, don't go, the big shows if you don't have 100k in your rig you have no chance. I don't do car shows unless it's for a good cause. Then you wonder how much of the take gets to the cause.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I've been to tons of cars shows with my dad when he showed his 67 chevelle. I can't count the times he was frustrated over one thing or another with classing. having seen all of that I tend to like the show and shine type shows a little better. Amazing what guys will nitpick over, especially when it comes to those older muscle cars.
In a case like yours it seems a bit extreme, especially for a best of show trophy. A lot of it depends on how the judging is done as well. If it was a sponsored award by a dealer or vendor where they get to pick, that could have a lot to do with it as well. Some shows, like a lot of the regional chevelle shows here, have gone to the 100 point system, which in my view is just stupid for modified cars. makes sense on a concours type of restoration.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I just go to the shows to see old cars and hang out with my friends. I very rarely enter my car in the show. But when I do, it is mostly so I can take my own beer in a cooler since coolair won't let me drink all of his. If you approach the shows this way, you'll never be disappointed.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
If everyone stopped attending shows because they got beat out there wouldn't be anymore....
I've been beat out by newer and older total POS's with my 97 (74's not done yet). Like others have mentioned, A show is just that.....A place for car/truck nutz to get together and show their talents off and talk. If you win something that just adds to the satisfaction of having a fun day out....

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I can agree a little with the non-post 72 shows on both sides. a classic car is legally in most states anything over 25 years old. So it is a rolling year. But most of those shows only consider pre-70's classics. Heck, even allowing up to 72's a is a big deal for shows like GG. They used to be pre-50 only!
Even amongst certain groups (again I'll pick on the chevelle guys), going post 72 ruffles a of feathers. And they wonder why their participation drops, especially with the 'younger' crowd... But 72 is generally considered the end of the muscle car era. Nowadays though there are a lot of post 72 cars and especially trucks that are being built cause those older cars are way too hard to find and way too expensive to build. I'll still go to them and am planning on the attending the TX GG event in a couple weeks just for ideas and to look at the cool cars.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
If you show long enough if will happen to you.
Luckily to my experience the fresh of the showroom cars usually are in a stock class & i've spent most my time in a modified class. BUT... i have also seen it go the other way. There are alot of instances when a club putting on a show would rather give awards to an older vehicle than a new one. (which i personally agree more with) In my opinion if 2 vehicle are identicialy scored after judging (and re-judging) the older one should get edge. Last edited by JWall; 09-22-2010 at 02:50 PM. |

If you really want trophies buy a few, they're cheap. I go to lots of cruise ins/shows and many times my vehicle seems like it is invisible. Every now and then somebody notices the little details, your personal touches, crawls under your vehicle to see it all. To me that is better than any trophy I could ever win!!

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
My dad and I only do the "charity" shows, if I am going to give someone my $ I would rather it go to a worthy cause. I agree, if you expect to get something, your in it for the wrong reason, but it does irk me when some POS or some "new" vehicle wins just because they are 10 minutes off the lot or because they are someones buddy.
I also go so I can chill with friends and other car guys.

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I love going to cruise ins, but I hate trophy hogs, there is always that one a$$ that fires his car up and flies away right after winning his "trophy". my dad has walls of them from car shows and the only reason is because the profits always went to charity. He stopped entering when they became a for-profit organization

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
I think the best win of any show is when they offer a "peoples choice". The public gets to pick the winner by ballot.
That winner didn't have to compete with the "buddy system", dealership bias, etc. Cayoterun

Re: Has this happen to you at carshows???
Showed at many shows have won several trophies and plaques but dont always expect to place. Now what I do I drive to the shows park my truck in the middle somewhere for whatever time it takes me to walk around then I leave I dont spend my whole day there anymore. I remember one specific show where a Solstice won best of show and the damn car was completely stock we were floored and thats when I decided I was done paying to show my truck I usually attend car cruises and regular non award hangout only when I have the time.
