engine died while driving down freeway
I was driving my '83 down the freeway yesterday and I smelled something that smelled like burnt toast! I was off the throttle and when I looked down at the gauges I saw the choke light was on. :-( My engine had stalled. I was rolling down the off ramp and came to a stop. Saw no smoke, and could no longer smell the weird smell. I cranked and it started after a few more cranks than normal. I popped the hood and looked it over while idling. Only thing I noticed was a pretty good drip coming from the fuel line going into the carb. I tightened that up and could not find anything else wrong. It confused the heck out of me. I'm thinking that maybe the smell was from something else, not my truck. My windows were down.
I'm thinking that now may be as good of a time as any to just yank the old tired 305 and drop a fresh 350 in it. i have been planning on an engine swap since buying the truck a few months ago. I just dont really have much money to fund the swap right now. Will a 350 need a different flywheel than my 305? I recall a different bolt pattern and i.d. between a 305 and 350 from a different project. I'm thinking everything else should just swap right over if I buy a long block.
