Speedometers

I see several brands of aftermarket speedometers are available. Just wondering how these things work, and if they can be calibrated or adjusted based on a particular transmission or gear ratio. Also are there cable types that can be adjusted to match our mismatched gears, engines and transmission combinations?

Re: Speedometers

I'm putting together a 1960 suburban and the dash console and gauges are to be replaced. In answer to your question it seems that you can buy a mechanical speedo and probably with swapping out 'driven gears' you can just about dial it in or figure out which tooth count gear you need to match your rear end . But after all of that you can buy an electrical gauge that seems to be able to be easily set up electrically to give correct readings. Electrical speedo is about twice the cost of a mechanical one.

Re: Speedometers

An aftermarket mechanical speedo isn't going to be able to be adjustable. You would still need to change the gears in your trans to get the speedo to be accurate.. Some of the electronic speedos are adjustable as Big Fenders said.

Re: Speedometers

Get a GPS speedo and electric guages. This way you dont have to even care what rear gears or trans speedo gear ya got, just drive the crap out of it.
