Bare Metal Trucks

Just wondering if any one has any pics of bare metal trucks or any that have been striped to bare metal and then clear coated?

I just started on my 68 short fleet and was thinking about sandblasting and then clearing and was wanting to see some others that may have been done this way.

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

It's a rare 42 year old truck that is totally rust free and doesn't have any hidden body repairs under all that paint. Even the factory may have done some repairs. It'll be interesting to see what you discover as you strip to bare metal.

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

Never said that she was rust free! I am planning on fixing the rusty spots and then blast everything. I know that it wont look perfect but I really dont want it to be perfect. It is going to be a driver and if I ever decide to sell it then no one can say that I am trying to hide any body damage with bondo. Who knows, it may look like crap but then again its mine and thats how I am building it.

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

There is a 71/72' C10 Blazer that runs around my area that is this way and I absolutely love the look. It looks chrome from a distance and you can the grinder pattern(s) up close. It is a cool look, go for it, worst case its already prepped for paint!

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

It's cool look.I'm thinking that some of the clears might be cool with a bit of pearl or colored metalflake.Just enough to give it a tint.Don't do brown,it might look like flash rust.

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

Not my cup of tea but it's a different look. The problem is that is looks so cheap like it was driven out of a salvage yard. I'm not saying that money did not go into the truck but that is the look it gives. I prefer a clean stock look or a Chip Foose Style that is clean. Everybody has there own style and that makes the world go around.

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

I've been preping my truck for paint the last 3 weeks. I keep bringing it to bare metal before a primer. So far no rust besides the left door on the bottom right... But i like actual color more :P

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

With a bunch of careful sanding and polishing before clear, it would look like a delorean!

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

Here's my 68 i used Gibbs oil and atf but eventually gave up as it's far to wet here to keep it shiny without a garage. If it was easier to maintain I would definitely keep it bare metal but about the only way to do it is completely dehydrate the metal then clear it and even then it's likely to fail.

AWESOME! i have wondered how to dehydrate and clear. seems clearing over bare metal would still let rust linger. Is there a way?

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

I guess you can do it with a torch but my honest opinion would be wash it with soap and water then bake the entire truck in an oven the same way you do powdercoating. And if you're going that far you might as well powdercoat the thing. I think bare metal is an awesome look but the hell you would go through to maintain it might not be worth it unless your metal working skills are top notch

The garage door tracks make a great place to hang parts for painting like the last pic . Just make sure no one hits the automatic door opener !

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

I like the looks of an all metal truck, but 99.999% of them need some sort of filler or patch repair. Seems pretty near impossible to find one in perfect shape to do it. hows it done? As far as drying the body, send it to a climate like the Arizona dessert to let it cook for a week...

Re: Bare Metal Trucks

This thread was from 5 years ago, and that seemed to have been the height of the craze... it's been a while since I've seen any "new" ones done. Clearing over "patina" has taken over for now.
