BB starter Heat Shield questions
I am getting things hooked up to start up my 402 BB motor. I have read on here in the search forum that I may have problems with ruining my starter unless I install a heat shield.
Are the heat shields only to cover the solenoid or the whole starter? Do you have to take off the starter to bolt up the heat shield ? Can you buy this heat shield from the local parts stores? If any of you have made your own shield ,,could you give me your Ideas and what metal and thickness you used to do so.. and how you fastened it ? |

If I drove the Car more than 20 minutes and turned it off, I'd have to wait 45-60 minutes of "Cool Down Time" before it would start up again. The Blanket took care of that, even on the hottest days.

WWOTr
I found a thermo blanket wrap and it looks like you have to put a band around it and therefore still maybe have to take the starter off.. not sure though..cost is around $45 The metal one ,, I am pretty sure is you have to take the starter off to fasten it and it cost is around $26 How did you fasten your heat shield blanket ? and where did you get it at..? I guess these are the questions I have now to decide between what I have found out vrs. what something like what you used.. thx if you can describe what you did .. |

Re: BB starter Heat Shield questions
Summit and Jegs both sell heat shield blankets for starters and if I remember right for less than $30. I bought one from Summit if I remember right.
The starter did not have to be taken off. The best way to beat the heat problem is to go with a high torque mini starter I think.

thx ,,I may just do that shield blanket one ..My starter is brand new and installed/shimmed and for right now all I want to do is get it running and then work on the brakes and other things before I hit the road with it.. so beings I am only going to run it for a short time right now I think I can get away with putting off the heat shield .. I still want to put something around the stater bedfore I put on exhaust pipes on that would make it even harder to do . I come to this way of thinking of what I want to do with the feedback I have gotten from all of you and also the search on the forum ..thx to all who shared thier information with me.. papa Larry |

Re: BB starter Heat Shield questions
I like to experiment with different things so on the 454 in my truck I am going to put the starter blanket on it and a remote solenoid.
If that doesn't work I will go with the mini starter I have off a '95 Chevy truck. I had it rebuilt not long ago. My son runs the mini starters, but since I am now using the stock starter I am going with other things first. Good luck.

Re: BB starter Heat Shield questions
I'm having these same issues but have a question about the 'mini starter'. If the problem here is heat (my starter and wires are basically resting against the headers), then how does simply installing a 'mini starter' help? I did purchase a 'Mr. Gasket' starter heat shield, although I think it will be a real PITA to install..will have to remove the headers I think, can't hardly even get a wrench on the starter. Also for the heat shield, this does provide protection for the starter/solinoid, but does nothing for the wires that are still get super hot and are all oily. I've also read about the 'remote solinoid' as a possible fix..I can see why this would work as you are putting this in a location far from the heat.
I could maybe just go with a 'heat blanket' and perhaps can get this around the starter/solinoid without having to remove the headers, but again this does nothing for the wires. Lots of options and I understand the concepts of each..except for the 'mini starter'. Also-if anyone has installed the 'mr. gasket' starter heatshield' on their truck that has headers, I'd love a picture or 2 or perhaps some advise on how to go about installing this thing. thanks! |
