Have a 79 shorty, but the steering colum on the tilt is all over the place, is there a bushing in there, or is the steering shot...Best way to fix it would be??...Thanks

On the tilt columns, there is a knuckle in there that has four (4) screws in it. Those come loose and the steering column slops around a lot. They can be tightened and set to stay, by using locktite, they will stay.

You can strip the column down while it is in the cab and fix this, but you have to have a couple special tools to pull the lock plate on the top and the pivot pins in the side of the column. WIth the tools the job can be done in about two hours.

The two special tools, not counting a wheel puller, are very cheap tools and are pretty much a must have. Otherwise it's just some time and effort, not that hard really.

I did it to my column. It wasn't too bad. It took me a 2 or 3 hours, and a lot of head scratching. Take a lot of digital photos as you go. If you are like me, you WILL need them when you put it back together.

I have had other problems with my column for the last 10 years, and I have been unable to fix it after 3 attempts. No one on here has been able to figure it out, either. I finally broke down and bought a rebuilt column from this guy. I just got it, and still need to put it in.

I haven't stuck any of the levers or anything on it, but it LOOKS nice. I believe that N2TRUX bought the column in his truck from the guy, and was happy with it. I looked him up on ebay (I don't use ebay, I bought it through his website), and he had a really good rating. Look him up as gmtilt. He still has a 100% feedback.

I am hoping to install it this weekend or next weekend. I'll have a better idea then.

I had the same problem with mine and it was repaired once but got loose again. I then decided to just buy a rebuilt column. It has been 4 yrs and no problems with it gettin loose.
Most of the time they ask for a core so call around.
