Clutch
I have a 350cid from a k5 blazer and an SM420 from a 64 pu. Should i use the stock sized flex plate for the motor and get a matching clutch and pressure plate? Or should i get the parts for the trans and find a flex plate that matches it

Re: Clutch
with a std trans you use a flywheel, not a flex plate. you can use a flywheel also from a 6 cyl 63- whatever year that it was that they changed around 90

Re: Clutch
Thanks for the reply! If i do that do i have to get a starter that mounts on the bell housing instead of the block? Or does it matter. I guess what i need to know is what is the right flywheel and clutch pack for my situation and can i keep my block mounted starter?

Re: Clutch
Far as I know, all starters mount to the block on a 350.

Re: Clutch
Yes they do but the bell housing for the sm420 has a starter mount that has to be ground off if i use the engine mounted starter

Re: Clutch
but in a 60-66 you would keep the stock belhousing, so the stock starter would still bolt to the belhousing.
*** just remembered you have a power glide... grab a 63-66 v8 or 6 cylinder starter, belhousing, clutch and pressure plate and flywheel for your conversion. if you are lucky you might be able to pull all the stuff, including the linkage and crossmember from the same truck. if you grab the column too, get one from a 65-66, the 64, early 64 are harder to get turnsignal parts for.

Re: Clutch
Thanks bud you just answered my question! Yeah i put in the column, pedals, and linkage all from a 64. The trans and bell housing are also from that truck. I kept all the guts from my original column just in case i need to make a Frankincolumn. Thanks alot guy's!

Re: Clutch
If you have a choice, ALWAYS use the bellhousing mounted starter. The boards are full of discussions about engagement problems with the block mounted starters that just can't happen with the bellhousing mount. This was definitely not one of GMs better ideas.
