Wider rear tires
Hello All -
So I'm building the rear to be posi now and since I have 2 tires that spin instead of one, I'd like to hook up. SO the question is with tubs, what is a good steel rim size for some bigger tires. I'm not looking to go with the pro street look. I just want a wider tire. I'm running 255/60 R15's now and they rub on the inside of the bed. (That's why I've ordered the tubs) What have you guys seen that looks good with a rear reverse rim (big lip). I have a stock width 64 axle. Pics would be a plus. Alex |

Re: Wider rear tires
I used to have 275/60/15's on 8 " rims on the back of my '65 stepside . They were a little tight but worked as long as you didn't have much weight in the bed . If you did , they would tend to rub a little inside and outside when going around a curve . Last time around , I replaced them with 255/70/15's . They're a little taller ( lower rpms at highway speed ) , a little less wide which helps with clearance .

Re: Wider rear tires
I have tubs on the way and a 5-speed transmission. Space and highway speeds aren't really the problem for me. I just want a little bit wider of a tire to get more grip at the strip and make it look a little better from the back But I'm not looking to go all out pro street. I actually don't think my axle is narrow enough for that anyway. I'm more just unsure of the rim size for the look I'm wanting.

Re: Wider rear tires
It will be somewhat dependent on if you have a fleetside or a stepside, along with the wheel offset, ride height, and how much extra clearance is obtained with the tubs. I have a 1960 stepside and have run 15x8” rims (with zero offset) and 255/70-15 tires with no clearance issues. A lot of others run 15x10” wheels, but ride height, suspension travel (because of the panhard bar), wheel offset, and tire size (section width) become far more critical.
The tubs may allow much more backspace than a stock setup assuming the wheels clear the frame and trailing arms. |

Re: Wider rear tires
I run a 15x10 rear wheel and a factory 64 rear and have no rubbing. I don't know the wheel backspacing but that's how you run wide tires on these trucks

Re: Wider rear tires
There are several peple running 10 inch rims on the rear, with a 5 inch back space on fleetsides, they tend to rub ( on the inside )on step sides...

Re: Wider rear tires
Sorry I guess I should have specified that I have a 64 SWB step side with 4'' drop springs in the back. Anyone have pictures?
