General Maintenance

Hey,

Thought it would be cool to see what everyone does for general maintenance on your truck.

So, what do you do, when, and what fluid/parts do you use?

Re: General Maintenance

For me, I just broke in my new motor and will be doing its first oil change tomorrow. I have yet had to replace the brakes in 7 years. I just discovered 3 grease zerts on the drive shaft so I did those the other day, and I greased the front end about a year and half ago. I have done one rear diff change and trans change.

In case your wondering, truck hasn't been driven much due to crapped out motor.

Re: General Maintenance

On my V20 and the C1500:
Change engine oil every 3000 miles with Rotella.
All filters are NAPA/Wix, change the air filter once a year, fuel filter every two years.
Grease front end and driveline every 3000 miles.
AC Delco plugs and wires.

On the K30:
Change engine oil twice a year with Rotella
NAPA/Wix filters, change as needed
Grease front end and driveline when the oil is changed, but it should be done more often than that.

I drive the K30 about 6-8k miles annually, the V20 around 12-14k, and the C1500 between 7-10k.

Re: General Maintenance

I do everything at 5,000 mile intervals. Change oil, grease everything, oil/grease moving body parts, air up tires, top off anything that needs it, rinse the bottom off, wash it, vacuum it.

I use regular old valvoline in the engine and trans and the valvoline ford/lincoln black grease in the all the greasable stuff.

I use purolator filters in everything.

Re: General Maintenance

i use 10w 40 havilene every 3000 miles and when i change my oil i check all fluid levels, test antifreeze, grease every fiting on the thing, i run a k&n air filter so i dont worry bout that, and then some times i do a check up on it before i haul off a load of scrap metal or do enything with pulling my trailer. and i usily add like a quart of oil bout every month.(it leaks just a lil and burns just a lil), but my 77 has been on a regular maintaince schedule like this since 1977 when dad bought it new and i changed the valve cover gaskits about 4 months back and the inside of the engine looked cleaner than a brand new 350 crate motor that what you get for well maintaining your engine. BTW this truck has 210,000 miles on it and the motor has never been overhauled, it still has the orgnal clutch, transmission, and differental also.

Re: General Maintenance

The Heap gets an oil and filter change every 2 months, Pennzoil 5W30, AC Delco PF-1218 oil filter. My V-8 S-10 gets the same every 6 months, both get a bottle of ZDDP with the oil change. The 2 and 6 month intervals may seem odd but both are driven mainly around town, the S-10 sees roughly 600 miles a year. Short trips with carburetor fed motors are tough on oil.

For air filters I write the date and mileage on the filter with a Sharpie and change them based on a visual check.

Fuel filters get swapped out once a year.
