new gears?
i've been thinking, instead of frontend kit or new exhaust for my birthday, i could ask for a new gear kit for my rearend.
there is a richmond gear package in jegs for $304 that includes everything needed to install the new ring & pinion, new bolts for the cover, cover gasket, bearings, shims, seal, and oil. i'm thinking replacing the 2.73's would help my gas milege quite a bit and also help my truck be a little quicker too! i would be getting 3.73's and then an eaton posi later this summer, possibly |

Could be mistaken but I think the lower gear ratio (2.73) would be better for gas miliage but worse for takeoff at the line. The 3.73s would give a better take off, but have an adverse effect on gas miliage.
However, 3.73s are good all around gears. You should not notice too much of a change if you switch to them. However I hear it's quite a PITA job to do. Jeff :p

i say it would help with the gas because it would keep my in my powerband without having to have my foot on the pedal as much.
so its like this: with the 2.73's to get the acceloration i want i would have to have the pedal 3/4's of the way in with the 3.73's i would have to have the pedal 1/4 or the way in so something to that affect with the lower gears, i wouldnt have to use the accelorator as much since the gears would help a lot |

At the same time, it's going to require more throttle at higher RPM's to move the same amount of truck. :p
The engine would also be working harder (turning more RPM) to keep the truck at 60mph, than it would with the lower gear ratio. It's a double edged sword really, but hey. The changes should not be too bad. If you were going to 4.56's or something however. Jeff

I hope you are also thinking about the cost of having someone (competent) to install your new gear set. It's not something that the average Joe can do. You have to have the proper tools to do it right. Typically it will run you $100-$200 for an install, atleast around here it does. I have a guy that will do my gears for a case of beer and teach me at the same time, but that's a different story. He owes me.

Eric- I would wait to get the posi and gears at the same time. You will need to get both setup by a professional like Ryan mentioned above. If you installed the gears then later did the posi you will be paying twice the labor. Plus another problem is that the carrier you have now may not work (probably won't) with the new gear setup. If it's like my rear axle it has a series 3 and the gears you are probably looking at are series 4. They have 3.73 that can fit the 3.73 but grab the series 4 and be much better off.
