what transfer case will fit?
I just put a 700r4 transmission in my '81 4x4, originally it had a th400 with a np 208 which has the front drive shaft located on the passenger side.
The 700r4 has 27 splines at the tail shaft and the 208 has 32 if I counted correctly so that one is out, can someone please tell me what transfer case will bolt in. I do not care about how strong or weak it may be as I never go off road but hey it is nice to have if you need it. Thanks for any help or suggestions. |

Re: what transfer case will fit?
A 208 from a th350 or a 700r4

Re: what transfer case will fit?
Thanks a bunch that seems pretty to find. The 700r4 I put in it had a 241 on it but the drop was on the driver's side.
Again, thanks. |

Re: what transfer case will fit?
they do have a ps drop 241 but those are vss or electric speedo I think.
I also think you can get a 203 or 205 from a th350 and it tork as well. The bolt pattern on the 700 tail is the same as a th350 tail so anything that fits one should fit the other. You just might need the adapter that joins the t-case to the trans because they might be different on the t-case end.

Re: what transfer case will fit?
Since your tranny has a 241 on it now get the 208 the tail shaft length is different for the 203 and the 205.

Re: what transfer case will fit?
Sounds like theres some knowledge here, so I'll jump in; my 82 has a th400 and a 205 case, I was told the case is a rare one. It has auto locking hubs, which I've never even seen on a truck that old. I'd like to keep the gear drive case, but I want to put a 700 in for the low 1st gear and especially the OD. Any idea what this would involve, if it's even possible?

Re: what transfer case will fit?
Detroit Dan, You wouldn't be able to use that transfer case at all because it has a female 32 spline input shaft for the turbo 400. You would need one with a male input shaft and a correct adapter for that transmission. I don't really know why you would want to get rid of that setup anyways, It's very strong and Its quite rare.

Re: what transfer case will fit?
because of the OD.
I'm msure advance adapters have a plate to mate just about any trans to any t-case but he is right for sure th350's and 700 are like 26 or 27 spline and then the th400 are 32. I did hear there are rare 32 spline 700s though.

Re: what transfer case will fit?
maybe I'll lean toward a Gear Vendor then. I just hate the 3 speed. I think the 700 is ideal because of OD and a better 1st gear, as long as you can make it strong enough. I'm pretty hard on my vehicles. I'd like to have a 5 speed manual, but that's a whole nother can of worms. I've had sm465s before and wouldn't go in that direction.
I missed out on a used Gear Vendor a while back, found one on Craigslist for $1200, in an 86 3/4 ton with a 454. I could have parted the truck out and made more than enough to buy the parts to switch the GV from a 2wd th400 to a 205 case. That would have been ideal but somebody beat me to it. I just want more gears and a little more gas mileage.
