73-87 A Arm bushing replacement

Hopefully this will be useful to someone. I forgot to take pics of the bushing removal but, I got them out basically the same way as I put them in. This is by no the means the only way or neccesarily the right way but, I used what I had and it worked for me.

The 1st picture just shows the shaft and the upper A-arm.


Here you can see the bushing in place ready to be driven in up to the raised area.


I then used a piece of 2" pipe to drive the bushing in


Once you have one bushing in you have to slide the shaft all the way through the arm into the 1st bushing.


Then I used a piece out of my ball joint press kit to support the arm with the shaft in it while I drove the last bushing in.


If you have access to a press you could press both bushings in at the same time, just don't forget to have the shaft in place.

I forgot to mention I used anti-seize in the shaft and the bushings before I put them in.

Now here are some pics of the lowers. It goes together the same as the upper, you'll just have to find a bigger pipe to drive the bushing in. The lower is a little hard to hold by yourself but it can be done.

Thanks for posting this my problem is I cant get the shaft out of the lower a arm i had a shop put them in a press and the arm was flexing so he stopped cuz he didnt want to damage the arm

I used a piece of 6" pipe to set the a-arm on then hit the bushing with my hammer until the bushing was flush with the arm. Then I used a punch to finish driving it out. Once you get the shaft out of the way the 2nd one is easier to get out.

i just did mine the other day. used a press from advanced auto (free just paid the full refundable holding charge) to pop my uppers out and put the new ones in. the kit doesn't come big enought for the lowers had to sit there and burn them out. lots of fun. but since it took so much work i figured i should redo everything. total rebuild of the ball joints, tie rods, cross member so i figured i would change out the motor mounts too. (never work on your DD) coming up on week 3 or the rebuild and i can tell you its getting cold riding the motorcycle every where.
