New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
Since selling my 61 Apache a few months ago, I have been on a non stop hunt for a truck to build, well I found a 66 SB fleetside that appeared to be in decent shape and priced very reasonably so I took a chance and had it shipped to Cleveland Ohio from Fresno California and luckily the truck was better then expected. I got a little ahead of my self and didn't take many pictures prior to tearing into the truck. My goal is to build a nice reliable driver in three months working evenings and weekends including doing a complete resto, drivetrain, suspension, interior, and most important slick body and paint work. I've got a jump start by buying a chassis from Suicide doors that only needs brakes and plumbed. It was a display chassis they no longer needed and it fit the bill well. The drivetrain will be a stock LS1 and 4L60E.
The wheels on the chassis are not going on this truck.

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
that is a cool truck. way cool. i have to say I'm diggin the patina just as is... it's only original (and rusty) once! What you've done so far looks great!
(for what it's worth, on my cars/trucks, I always SAY I like the patina, then paint it anyway. I guess it's in the blood) |

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
I ordered a set of Nate Porters' 60-66 Firewall/Cowl mount hood hinges. They are an excellent fit. Install time was about 8 hours, alot of it measuring, trimming, and measuring. This is a job you will need a friend around to help, the hoods are not light. I haven't done anything with hood struts yet but will address that shortly. The buttonhead screws that came with the kit have a tendency to round out before you get them tight enough so the hinges will get hex bolts on the hood side during final assembly.

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
The truck needs very little rust repair, I started gutting the interior so I can make it to my appointment at the strippers, its getting blasted inside and out.
I also removed the inner rear body panel to ready it for a big window swap now they can blast behind the panel where otherwise they could not reach. I scored a big window cab locally so I will be removing that panel as soon as I can get it inside the shop, its currently plowed in and theres no way I'm cutting the cab outisde in this weather.

Boris,
I put a thread up about the BBW conversion, can you enlighten me on the difficulty/cost? I am not a welder or a fabricator, so a BS would be necessary. Thanks!

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
Can't wait to see it in person. That frame looked like a killer deal since I paid almost that much just for that same suspension for mine. You're gonna like how it rides. Maybe when the weather gets nice Erik and I will cruise out to your shop and check it out.
Let me know what you do about hood struts.

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
not really difficult but will need some touch up paint work if your truck is already painted. Basically I ground down 40 or so spot welds on the inner panel sides and bottom, I cut across the top with a cutoff wheel leaving just and 1/8" or so of inner panel so I would have more room to reach the spot welds at the roof. A cut was made around he window opening and the piece came right out. I haven't cut the new panel from the donor truck but when I do I will cut it out exactly opposite so as not to grind any material off the inner panel, so in other words, I ground down the spot welds on the inside of the cab and the replacement panel I will grind the welds from the outside. The new panel will be installed with panel adhesive at the top and spot welded across the sides, bottom and around the window opinion pinch. Without paint its probably a good 15-20 hour job plus prepping the replacement panel which needs to be removed very carefully from the donor cab. I think if someone brought me a gutted cab and didn't want the paint work, I would be ok with doing the job for about a grand and I have plenty of overhead.

Re: New project @ Street Machinery 1966 C10
I have just about everything out of the cab, looks pretty solid and all original, even the wiring harness looked brand new and didn't have one wire cut or spliced, I have never seen a 45 year old harness in that nice of shape. Pulled the cab and off to the strippers on Tuesday. You guys out west don't know how luck you are.

This thing sure looks good on the transport. I know you have done a lot of patina cars and trucks, but this one would have been ideal for the job.

Looks like a clean truck man, you bought that truck from a town about 40 minutes north of me. Sounds like a good project. The big back window will make it look way better.
