my rear end

i know this has been asked before but i have a gmc and trying to figure rear end ratio. i thought maybe GMC guys would chime in--mark-- anyway i get three and a half turns on drive shaft with one revolution of wheel. any body have same ratio? thanks

there should be a code on top of the axle tube you can find out that way also.

There should be a tag on there showing the gear ratio. The rear ends have stamped ID's as well.


Raise and support the rear of the truck with jack stands.
Read the metal tag attached to one of the differential cover bolts.
This tag, which is always present (if not removed by a previous owner), will indicate the gear ratio that came with the vehicle originally.
This tag may not be valid if the previous owner has changed the ratio, and you will have to remove the cover to find the gear ratio.

this is why i asked for the gmc guys this is a dana 44 no tags or stamps on axle tube. there are some stampings on the rear housing but i looked them up and they are patent # i do have a number on lower right flange of rear end that is 44-1

How I was taught to determine rear end ration is this..Jack up one wheel, mark pinon flange and then rotate the free wheel exactly two rotations while looking at and counting the pinon flange rotations...best done with two people. Divide one by the other to determine ratio...
