swapping tranny ?

i have a 1966 chevy truck with 292 and manual tranny .
im putting in a 1990 350 tbi motor with 700r4 tranny.
question is can the old cross member be used or modified to work with the 700r4 or is it better to just make one or buy one?

Re: swapping tranny ?

Do you have the crossmember from the doner vehicle? You may be able to use both of them to build one.

Re: swapping tranny ?

I was able to use mine, but that was a 283V8/4 speed combo. Not sure if the x-members are the same. Just had to drill out the rivets and move it back a bit.

Re: swapping tranny ?

you can use any automatic trans crossmember from 66-72 truck, fits under the rear of trans and bolts to frame rails - you may have to drill new holes

If you're talking about the bellhousing crossmember, that has to come out. Then you need a rear transmission crossmember. I always us a factory '66-'87 auto trans crossmember. You can usually pick one up at a wrecking yard for a reasonable price.

Re: swapping tranny ?

I put a 350 in a 60 and used a 700r4. Here is what I fabbed for about $15.00. As the good captain said, you'll need to get rid of the one in place now for the manual trans, it'll be about dead center on the trans pan of the 700r4, so of no use. I just used bar stock and intstalled it using the pre-existing holes in the frame. Even though not used the frames (most all i have seen) come with 3 holes drilled on either side of the frame in the right spot (where the crossmember for the automatic is located). The pattern is: (. ' .) and i used the bottom two on each side for the supporting ears that hold up the bar. The bar has two holes drilled in the center to accept the bottom of the standard rubber/metal trans mount which bolts to the to the botom of the trans in the standard 2 bolt pattern. Also, you'll probably need the wiring pattern to wire the converter lock up and i'll attach that too. Got it from some one on this board. Good luck. It's really not that bad a swap and the results are worth it.

Do you just completely remove this or do you put something else in its place to help with frame strength? I will be doing a turbo 350 or 700r4 soon myself.

Re: swapping tranny ?

my 60 had the slip yoke, but i didn't use it. Used a one piece i had lying around and got it cut to length and balanced in a local truck service shop. I believe the yoke end has a very different type spline that may not be compatible with the 700r4. I don't know what the captain will say about the crossmember, but i can see no purpose for it or no reason for replacing it with something else for the sake of frame stability, but i'm far from an expert. Wait and see what Captain Fab says.

Re: swapping tranny ?

Just remove it completely. There is no need to replace it with anything, except a crossmember at the rear of the transmission.
