Question Am I being ripped off

I took my truck to the mechanic today because it was backfiring and popping while accelerating\decelerating\bogging down.. And taking taking a little long to start!

He said something about he would rebuild my distributor, Tune my carb, Fix my timing, and check for some vacuum leaks. I already replaced my cap and rotor, So id this included in the "distributor rebuild"?

He wants $150 To do this...

And he wants an extra $100 to put my headers on, is this a fair price or could I find cheaper?

My truck is a @ wheel drive SWB Chevy With a 350 motor and 350 Trans.

Re: Am I being ripped off

Sounds reasonable to me... Going rate around here is ~$100 an hour for labor. If it needs all the tuning and work mentioned that sounds OK

Re: Am I being ripped off

sounds very inexpensive to me...and if he's a good mechanic, it will come back to you very quickly in mileage.

Apparently you have never installed a set of headers. If you had, you would already know that 100.00 is a bargain. It seems no matter how simple they "look" to install, there is always something that requires modifications. Installing headers is always a pain to get done.

Re: Am I being ripped off

first of all mechanics are generally a rip off haha well not the mechanic himself but the company he works for thats why i do everything i can myself! but 150 sounds rather decent being as that will probably take him a while and 100 bucks for the headers isnt bad either it can be an easy job or a real pain (generally a real pain).. like misternash said if hes a good mechanic it will pay you back in mileage.. id say go for it!! just dont let him walk you into a corner thinking you need to dump a bunch of extra money in to it.. we had a guy at a chevy dealer pocking small holes in fuel lines and various other hoses on the farm truck were i work just so we would have to come back!! just brutal.. but 250 for all that sounds good!!

I agree with these guys, but...I know there is always that, dont pay up front and ask for the old parts. just to keep him honest.

You apparently haven't been to a Chevy garage lately! Owning a Chevy I can see how that can happen, but if you have, you would know instantly that $150 is a sweat deal

The mechanic is doing it now! He is also fixing the mechanical advance! 150 dollars. We will see what it does for me! I hope the truck is faster!

Re: Am I being ripped off

Okay well I got it back! It runs good and smooth! No backfiring! No popping, he took at belt off of my smog pump? Is that bad?
Other than that, it is a little shaky at idle when I stop at a light, and it takes a little long and pumping of gas to start! It didn't do this before! He said my starter is weak?
