Me and Cheyenne almost died today

so i recently put a new carb in and my high idle solinoid has been acting up and it sometiems comes on after 10 mins of driving you cant notice till you go to slow down and it wont go under 2500 rpm makes stoping not so easy and to top things off iv blown a seal in my master cylinder last week and have been driving around with very very little brakes as i havnt had time to find a new one yet..
so i was coming up to a stop sign ( which i slow down ahead of time for) and my solinoid kicked in and wouldnt let me stop so i throw it in nuetral turn the key off and on again and it kicks down but i held the key off to long for the motor to keep running so i lost any power in my breaks so as im about to head through a stop sign at an end of a road full of traffic i had no choice but to bounce it off a snow bank to slow me down then crank it around the corner on the the wrong side of the road onto the shoulder.. really motivated me to fix my breaks!! scared me pretty good just figured id share.. im glad im okay but most important cheyenne was not harmed in the process.. i felt bad side swipping her into a frozen snow bank but it was my only option.. poor girl.. rattled me pretty good felt like sharing!!!

At least you had the presence of mind to not panic and do what you needed to do to get yourself stopped and avoid any (major) damage to you, your truck, and everyone else! Sounds like a pretty harrowing experience... get those brakes fixed!

Glad you are safe...the truck is okay....but please....take this as a not subtle reminder to fix your brakes....before you drive again!

Re: Me and Cheyenne almost died today

I've done stupid stuff before and thank GOD I've never hurt anyone else in my path.. .PLEASE think of other people when we choose to do stuff like this. I know I couldn't live with myself if I killed someone or someones kid because I couldnt find the time to put a $25 master cyl on my truck... Not giving you a hard time, just the son of a great woman who was greatly disabled by a driver making a bad decision.

Re: Me and Cheyenne almost died today

i no i do think of those things to.. iv been more then prepared to throw my truck into a ditch before i hit anyone else.. and iv been driving my gfs car as much as possible... iv been having a hard time finding a master cylinder around here.. will one from a 1/2 ton work on my 3/4 ton.. very sorry to hear about your mother its never fair when someone elses decision has to affect someone so greatly.. iv made my share of mistakes aswell i rolled a truck with two friends in it.. we all walked away and i was the only one with serious injury but my best friend went out the window surprisingly it saved his life because his hole side of the cab caved in to the seat.. but when the truck stopped rolling and i didnt see him in it i hit a real brick wall of a lesson learner. it was the worst feeling in the world..i couldnt help but smile when i seen him standing in the field with not even a scratch.. so although driving my truck is a bad choice i dont want you guys to think im an idiot. iv been going very slow always paying attention ready to drop my tranny and throw it in rewind if i really needed to or ditch it and i only take back roads to work and back.. but i will sleep much easier once this is fixed.. luckily i can have the car to the weekend and hopefully i can get it sorted out by then.. any tips on locating a master cyl or any that ideas on what would bolt up would be more then greatly appreciated.. thanks guys!!

Re: Me and Cheyenne almost died today

A remanufactured should not be that much. Just looked on partsources website and they are the same prices as Canadian Tire and it is 32.50 plus a 7 dollar core charge. Not worth the time to try and track down a used or or worth the trouble of it being no good also, oh and howdy neighbour , not too far away from you

Glad your safe! I had a similar problem. Scared me too. Got it fixed shortly after that. What were you trying to do by turning it on off?

the high idle solinoid randomly comes on and stays on.. stoping the power to it for a second will let the plunger come back in!!

and i FINALLY got the breaks fixed.. no more close calls for me.. now i just have to get used to having brakes again haha

Re: Me and Cheyenne almost died today

As a refugee from he great white north I never thought I would say this, but than god for snow banks and frozen slush
The fast idle solenoid on my big block q jet has the adjustment bolt unscrewed so far that it does not engage the throttle bracket. It is not a problem for me, except when the A/C is on - and even then I just have a slow idle and low charging but I have the carb idle set just high enough so it won't stall. I also have a manual choke which I have learned to install on all of my carbureted old trucks - helps in many ways, especially when you are starting out on ice and your engine is racing because the temperature is cold enough to signal the automatic choke to close up.

Re: Me and Cheyenne almost died today

No sense beating yourself up about it. Point is, you reacted correctly based on the situation, and came out the other side a little older, and a whole lot wiser. These are the adverse situations that God? sends our way to hone our characters. As for driving around without good breaks, I know the deal. It was a long time ago but I was raising 2 babies by myself, no money, no brakes on the truck, and I would make essential trips using the E-brake!!! You gotta do what you gotta do... What about the guy with perfect brakes, over driving conditions, and rear ends another driver cause he wasn't paying attention? S**t happens man.

Please learn from this... You are way too young to be risking your life and the lives of others.

Well said. Please keep it in the driveway if it is unsafe. You owe that to yourself and others.

Thank you
!! lets see im 20 i work a fulltime job and a part time job and only have 2 days off a month i have my own place and no family for 500km so when my truck has little brakes and i have nothing but back roads to travel i dont have any other option... and if you think im just lazy i biked an hour there and an hour back all summer last year but you cant really do that in the winter so ya its a little dumb but i gotta do what i gotta do and if its down to it were im gonna hit someone i would have much sooner crashed me and only myself into the ditch.. and when you work on a farm you dont really have the option of just calling in.. someone has to take care of the animals!!

but on a lighter not the brakes are back in great working condition i couldnt find a master cyl to fit so i just pulled the piston out and beefed it up with 2 o rings.. seems to work well but im gonna keep looking for another one just in case.. i hated not having them working.. if only it was summer and i could just take my kawi
