Question Gas gauge

On the 87 sending unit the ground for the pump and the gauge is combined. On the 97 I am installing it was originally seperated. Can I get away with it being combined or will i need to separate it??? Any help would be great.

My guess either way will work. Since the 97 guage is designed to have it seperate, I would go that route.
