Battery Ground Question?

Hey guys,

Quick question. I have been told that as a good rule you should do the following.

1 Run your main battery ground from the battery to the motor.
2 Run a ground strap or 4 guage wire and ground from the motor to the frame.
3 Run a ground strap or 4 guage wire and ground from the frame to the body.

Does this sound like a good route to go???? Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: Battery Ground Question?

That's how I do it and have seen it done. Another thing I do, is I use the same gauge negative wire as I do positive. Like running amps, lights, winch, ect.

Re: Battery Ground Question?

Make sure your bed is grounded to the frame so the rear lights get a complete circuit.

Re: Battery Ground Question?

It is kinda funky how GM did it on some trucks. Ground wire to the cab from the battery, then from the cab to the starter, maybe they wanted to save on battery cable.

I overkill the grounds on my motors.
like you said, main battery ground goes to motor.
I then run two ground straps between the motor and the frame. One goes from the back lower part of the motor to the passenger side frame rail.. other goes from front lower part to the frame near the engine mount.
I then run another short strap between the passenger side head, and the cab.

on the battery itself, theres two main grounds, a big wire (that we put to the motor) and a smaller one, that I ground directly to the cab.
on the cab itself, there is another large ground strap on the passenger side going between the cab and frame.

All of these are braided straps about an inch wide. 4 gauge, and look like this:

(btw, i just used grainger for the pic... i dont actually buy it from them)

Along with all this, I use ALL the grounds in any OEM EFI harness, and I always overkill the grounds I add in the harness... ground loops SUCK.

Re: Battery Ground Question?

thanks for the info guys. I just finished up installing new grounds. Looks like everything is working correctly, guages, head lights, tail lights and turn signals. Trying to get buttoned up and get my project of the road.

thanks again
