This Looks Shady

I hope these are not owned by a board member. These "NOS" shoulder belts look like a scam. They totally look used and repainted, they do not have the dimpled top cover, they do not have info tags on them. I say BS! Watch out!

The one close up buckle doesn't look all that mint, but the seller acknowledges that.
Could these be OEM new verses NOS and the seller is using the wrong term? I have seen new OEM that wasn't what I would call mint condition but very nice. Just a thought.

Hard to tell, he did say he had to cancel his last auction because they were listed as perfect condition until he took them out of the box and noticed some imperfections. He does have what look to be the original boxes as well..

Re: This Looks Shady

I don't know guys. I have a set of shoulder harnesses and they not only have date labels they have a shoulder belt use warning label on them (see photo). The correct top receptacle also has a molded-in dimple that holds the buckle in it when not in use (see photo). I also kept the empty GM boxes I could fill with whatever I wanted to appear to be NOS. There are people that know more about the shoulder harnesses, but I am VERY skeptical. I just went and looked at photos of some NOS belts advertised by IronMike and his are clearly NOS. The Ebay buckles look repainted and both buttons look used/damaged to me. Lastly, I doubt GM ever produced a belt without an ID tag!

Were shoulder belts an option? My truck has plugs in the pillar that look they could be a mount for shoulder belts. I always figured a PO installed some and then removed them.

Re: This Looks Shady

His ad says they are for Blazers and Jimmys. I don't know anything about stock shoulder harnesses, but were the Blazer and Jimmy ones different? I am sure the bolts probably were. Maybe Blazers/Jimmys had a different way to hold the buckle when not in use???

Re: This Looks Shady

I luv detective stories. This is a good example to why we ask before we buy if we do not have a warm and fuzzy feeling about the item that we are about to purchase.

Buyer beware.

and this is what is great about this site, it's all about the little details, and without folks around noticing things like this, guys like me wouldn't even notice. I mean seat belt details.......awsome.

Yes they were an option. I am not sure if they were optional in all the years (67-72). All trucks came with that plug unless it had shoulder belts.

Re: This Looks Shady

I believe they are original GM parts. But, I think they are something that GM produced in the late 70's or 80s. Ironmike72 had a set of NOS seatbelts, which were GM replacement seatbelts...using the 6-band webbing. These shoulder belts use the 6-band webbing, too. But if you look back at the ones that Ironmike72 had for sale, the GM buttons on the buckles were lacking the "Mark of Excellence" inginia. Converesely, these have that insignia. Maybe, these shoulder belts were made earlier than the belts that Ironmike72 had were made. I'm not sure about that either. I have two NOS black should belts, one with a date code of '73, the other '72. One is missing the warning label, while the other one has it. Definately GM was lacking something in quality control along the way in regards to mine. I can't imagine why GM would not put ANY date codes on these, though. But, I would venture to guess that ones on eBay are GM, and GM used the Corvette boots A(no retaining dimple--verticle or horizontal style) since they most likely were still producing the Corvette boots at the time of producing these shoulder belts. Just my guess, though. As Arsenio Hall used to say, "Things that make you say hmmmm?"

Re: This Looks Shady

those retainer boots are readily available on corvette repro parts. they are not original to our trucks. shoulder harnesses were a factory option from 67-70 and a dealer installed option in 71-72 from what i have read. mine came from a 67 and are identical to Dans.

I dont think you could get a shoulder belt for a 69-72 Blazer, no attachment point with the fiberglass top, and the optional rollbar at that time sat to far back to use it. I did have a factory rollbar from a 73 up Blazer and it had a threaded bung on a tab for a shoulder belt, maybe these are for the 73 to 75 Blazers that still had the full fiberglass tops.

Probably. I used to have a complete set of NOS beige shoulder belts that were dated '73. They came with the mounting hardware for a blazer.

Re: This Looks Shady

Actually 69-72 blazer tops have 4 attachment points for shoulder harnesses. 2 in the same location as pickups and two in the rear for the rear seat.

Is there a single wall to double wall difference ? I can see a double wall having them, but don't remember if the removable single wall top has them. Just wondering.

Re: This Looks Shady

Yes, Single walls have them too. The one on my blazer does, and all the others I have ever seen do also. There are 4 little plastic plugs, just like the ones in pickups.

I have to agree there. I saw a photo once of a 69-72 blazer that had rolled over. The roof and windshield frame were completely flattened down to the top of the dash and the top of the bed sides. I have a roll bar in mine, but haven't figured out seat belts yet.

At least they're only a little over 400 right now

Does anyone have a factory bucket seat/console truck with shoulder belts? Wonder how you store the belts since the original lap belt receiver was stored in the console?
