got my truck towed!

I was cruising down the high way just fine, got on it to play with an import a few times, got off the highway came to a stop at traffic, released the brake and gave it a bit of gas and..
TH400 go boom! bang..bang..bang and rattle... from the sound of it I thought I broke my drive-shaft,It was banging all over the place.
But looking under the truck you would think there was nothing wrong, no visual damage.
Once you try and put the thing in gear.... O boy! its like the Tasmanian devil is trying to break out from under the truck.

AAA to the rescue!!!

well when I pull it out I will truly see what I broke..

Sorry to hear that. Let us know what it is.

Maybe it's just the angle but your truck looks bigger than the wrecker...

Re: got my truck towed!

Agreed. make sure you take pics of the carnage when you pull it apart. But at least there was no damage anywhere else

nope, that dude was pissed, he came around for a 2nd run and the ol'e beater pulled on him hard. He got spanked by an old beater and flashed his headlights at me as I exited the highway. I was all smiles until I tried to move after stopping and she said NO MORE, I want my garage!

Well at-least she gave me a great big smile on her way out.

Re: got my truck towed!

Look at the brite side, atleast you have AAA and dont have to pay the tow bill. They have rescued me more then once. Also may be a good time to upgrade to a overdrive tranny.

yeah, thought about that, but I will need to change out my 308 rear for a 373 if I go that route.

I was thinking about that, I'm pretty lucky, the part of the highway I was driving was in-between the "DPS" patrol areas of the highway, so I got off before I hit the area where I know the "DPS" patrol.

Re: got my truck towed! Update!

well good news and bad.

Good news, it was only the drive shaft that broke!

Bad news, I now don't have a good reason to buy a new OD tranny

Time for a new drive shaft, Question, should I get a 1-piece?
Should I expect any problems if I do go 1-piece with a 2" rear block drop?

anyone have some pics of a 1-piece shaft in their short bed trucks that they would like to share?

Scott

Re: got my truck towed!

sorry to hear about your problem but good to hear its only the driveline. I had replaced mine with a one piece years ago and I have my truck lowered 4-6 drop and no problems with the drive shaft so you should be fine. with a 2" block drop. sorry no pictures at this time

Re: got my truck towed!

Update:
Brought the drive shaft to inland, they said they could fix it and would call with estimate.

I almost got home when the phone rang,
It was the guy from Inland, he told me, looking at this closer,
it will have to be re-tubed & need a new knuckle.
At this point the price is already in the area of $450...

So I asked how much for a new 1 piece, he said $275.00 plus tax.
But he told me he was sure that I would have to cut out the hoop in the truck to clear the 3.5" tube
.

I told him when I get home I'll measure for a one piece & call in back.
Got the measurements, and called him with the specs of 61.5" from the tranny seal to the rear end joint cup.

So he made me one of these.

Changed the rear seal while I was at it.... What a pain to get out while still in the truck

pretty easy going back in, with my backwoods tool making skills

Ground down the rivets holding on the carrier bearing mount and smacked it off with a hammer!

New shaft cleared no problem

So all in all not to hard to make the swap, as long as you have a grinder.
After the test drive, I think I need to replace the output shaft shim in the tranny. still leaking a tad, and I noticed the shaft had some play in it...

Well atleast I can drive it once again!!!!

Re: got my truck towed!

Wow! that pic were you can see how it sheared off is an eye opener, I expect there was some metal fatigue at that point and pulling away hard just made it give up, I hope that one piece works out, as I've not heard to many good things regarding one piece DS on lowered trucks, let us know how it is.

On a side note I've noticed something on your truck I've not seen in any other pics on here before...that little bracket which seems to hold the EB cable at the back of the trany, now I see whats missing on mine and more importantly why my cable sits jammed against the trany support...I need me one of those.

Re: got my truck towed!

hmmm, never gave that bracket much thought..... just thought it was a stock piece.

Come to think about it, this truck was a 2 owner truck, the father who bought it, and the son who restored it in the 90's, so maybe it is a stock piece. The son who restored it only was interested in looks, so he did all the things that people would see and left everything else alone and original... like the drive shaft!!!
So maybe it is reproduced? I'll check around...
