Rear Suspension Opinions

My '84 when purchased already had shackles and hangers for a 4" drop. I want it at least another 3" lower (it can be more)to tuck the 31" tires.

I already have purchased new Caltracs for non flip but I can change that easily they said.

I am considerling lowering leaf springs as to a flip kit since I already have 4".

I want the best set up for straight line traction. I would like your opinions....

It will have around 850hp on the street and more at the track.

I am not currently considering a 4 link or ladder bar at this time.

This. 800+ horses through a low rider leaf setup is going to do nothing but wrap your axle, and break drive shafts.

triangulated 4-link is my opinion.

Re: Rear Suspension Opinions

For that kind of power, you really do need to look into some frame reinforcements and a 4-link set-up. You will have a very hard time getting any of that power to the ground otherwise. Staying with leaves will probably give you a lot of axle wind-up, and lead to broken rear axles as well.

Caltracs will take care of that... they are doing well behind 1500 HP Stock suspended X275 Cars

x2 for caltracs. X275 cars are going bottom 8s on stock style suspension and a 275 drag radial. I'd do a flip kit and maybe some split mono leafs. Calvert can build those for your application. Add some double adjustable shocks and youll hook on dirt!

The motor is a Dart block 377, with Trickflow 215 heads, Victor Jr. intake and a Quick Fuel 750 blow through carb.

Twin 76mm Turbos running E85.

Complete Aeromotive Fuel System with -10 supply and -10 return

All I need to purchase now is a $3000 Turbo 400 and converter LOL

I'll work on getting pictures. Right now it just has the GM crate 290 horse engine and a turbo 350. This will do me until paint and suspension gets Ironed out.

My point of my post is that I KNOW that the Caltracs will hold up under some high horse power leaf spring cars. I was just curios which may be better for traction. Flipped or not. I asked Scott at Caltrac and he said either way, but you know how that goes...

Re: Rear Suspension Opinions

There is a bit of planning and testing that will need to go into either set-up. I wouldn't say that either is a "plug-n-play" type of thing, and will require proper chassis set-up. Those guys that are running 8's on DR's with CalTracs did NOT just slap them on and run. I can assure you of that.

I used to talk to a guy that had a 396 sbc that ran a 175 HP Hit... he had stock springs, Non-flipped Axle, Caltracs, and the Rancho 9000 shocks that Calverts sells... he was running bottom 10's and used a trans brake...
He ran really low 60'... but I cannot remember how low?
Anyway I asked him about his setup, and he said non-flipped worked best and having his pinion angle at -4.0°
I cannot remember his name... I'll see if i can find a video... that thing left hard

We definitely need pics of the twins

Re: Rear Suspension Opinions

I'm running the Western Chassis drop leaves with a stock 350. They are only 2 or 3 leaves thick, if that matters.

Anyone with common sense should know that, but I appreciate your input nonetheless.

I honestly didn't mean to state the obvious, but sometimes sense isn't quite so common. Cheers!

Re: Rear Suspension Opinions

with that much HP a 4 link will be you best bet, far more tuneable than any other option. other options can be made to work, but nothen beat's a "good" 4 link in a drag race application.
