Looking at a '63 schlong bed
Went on a business lunch today and one of the guys mentions he has a '63 schlong bed that his wife has been nagging him to get rid of. He bought is around '98 with intentions to fix it up with his son and it has sat under his carport from the day they brought it home. I went by his house on my way home from work and took a look. It's a no frills, small window, 283, three speed on-the-column, two wheel drive, manual/manual truck with a clean title. Overall pretty straight, bed was nice, tailgate nice, no visible rust-through in the cab, just the front fenders near the doors where rotted out. There was a receipt for a complete engine rebuild in '97, one year before it was bought and parked so that's a plus. I also love orange/white so it kind of had my attention. It would be a great starting point for a solid patina'd driver. He mentioned $1800 but if I had looked without him throwing out a price I would have offered $800. Not sure if I'll make an offer at all but I'm considering it. What do y'all think?

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
looks like a nice, solid truck. If you are looking for a restoration project or a cool daily beater, you should ABSOLUTELY consider that truck. The motor being rebuilt already is a big plus, and the apparent integrity of the truck as a whole is really not that common. i think even at the price he threw out, you would be ok.
You will be better off with a solid truck that cost more than you wanted to spend, than an inexpensive truck you'll never be happy with. Last edited by oem4me; 04-02-2011 at 01:51 AM. |

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
it looks good for sitting all those years but i guess a real deciding factor for me would be how well will it run and how strong is the clutch and of course you will have to go through the brakes when it comes down to a real offer.
good luck! |

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
There is a stack of maintenance records from right before it was parked so chances are fair clutch is good. I'd say at a minimum I would need to fix this stuff to drive anywhere:
seat repair brakes tune-up and carb rebuild fuel system cleaning tires exhaust (mufflers rusted out) fluids Then, as time and funds allow: disc brakes and power much lower white walls power steering trans swap

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
I think 1.8K sounds good!! I just question the engine rebuild; that thing looks pretty grimy for only being a 1 year old rebuild. I would pull a plug and check it out. Does it turn over??
If it is in good condition I'd pop for it.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
For that truck, even $1800 is a smokin' deal. Shoot him a lower price and see what he comes back with.
ALWAYS remember, to some guys, ANY cash in your hand is ALWAYS better than a nagging wife. Play that angle to your advantage!!! Act like you couldn't give a crap whether you buy it or not, and act like you're doing your co-worker a favor by keeping his wife off his back. 90% of the time, keeping peace in the house is always better than any material object. If it stays in the same place, it'll just rot into the ground. That truck is way too solid to succumb to that fate. SAVE IT FROM A SLOW DEATH!!

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
IMO, $1800 is a great price from what I can see and cant see.
The motor rebuild in 97 doesnt matter at all, THAT"S 14 YEARS AGO! might as well have a 48 yo engine.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
One more thing:
From the looks of the pictures, that thing looks like it's never been molested. Hard to put a price on that, especially when it'll save you hours and hours of scouring the wrecking yards looking for the missing parts. That dash looks beautiful, and the horn button is cherry. Love the factory red/white color combo, too.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
It's certainly worth the eighteen, I'd offer a thousand and go from there. I do agree with protrash64 the engine should be alot cleaner with the rebuild! It does'nt look like its been apart at all. Let us know the outcome.

Looks like a deal at 1800. Hard to find that rust free in the midwest.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
If it's as you describe it, it's a bargain at 1800.
Rebuilt 283 is a big plus in my eyes. |

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
Did you get it yet? If not, I'm booking a flight in a minute! Sounds like you could get a steal to me. 1,800 out here buys a basket case in most instances. Good luck!

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
I saw "Schlong bed" on another forum, pinstriped onto a longbed tailgate and it stuck with me
The price is definitely fair, but I'm not technically in the market right now so it would have to be REALLY fair to make a deal. I think he just wants to see it go to a good home, so maybe we'll make it work. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
I like the fact that it looks pretty original and complete. My '63 was kind of like that when I bought it, so, you know, I'd say go for it.

Re: Looking at a '63 schlong bed
For Arkansas that is a real decent looking truck.
Pros: All original rebuilt engine, although it looks terrible for being rebuilt, so check on it Cons: Rust along bottom of doors, back edge of cab and who knows where else? You should Check it over more..... I say give him an initial offer of $1,000......Go a little higher if needed. If he's a potential customer don't argue, pay the $1,800 and tell him you hope to do more business in the future and you'll keep him in the loop on the project..... |
