Waterpump?
Hi guys,
I need a new water pump for my '72 C20. I'm confused on some areas. One website shows options for a "long" or a "short" water pump. When I called Autozone, they have it in stock, but didn't know if it's short or long. Also, what size are the bolts that hold the water pump? I will be replacing those also.

Re: Waterpump?
if the back of the water pump touches the timing cover on the front of the motor it is short if there is a space it is long, 72 should be a short pump.

Re: Waterpump?
most of these trucks had the small 283--327 water pumps Cus of the lining up of the pulleys. That's only if no body went in there and started changing pulleys Look and see if any of my pictures help .Now there not the best pictures but the last one is from a 1972 nova with a 307 that is a tall water pump If you have AC it might change it but on my 1971 Cheyenne it still has the small water pump But on that 307 look at the pulleys are they simler to what you have .or do you just have a single pulley on the water pump and on the crank you will have 2 single pulleys

Re: Waterpump?
Not always on my 1971 chevy 1/2 ton Cheyenne it has AC and it has the small water pump and so is my 1972 chevy 3/4 ton deluxe. It has a lot to do with the brackets they used on the trucks to line up the belts.Me i prefer the 327 Small water pump the brackets and the pulleys line up so sweet. And it depends on the long throw Alternator bracket on the driver side or used the small Throw alternator arm on the Car's on the driver side.it can get quit confusing. And you can tear up belts in a heart beat

Re: Waterpump?
Great, thanks for the info. They don't need a core, so I will try to take the old one to match it up.
Anybody know about the bolts?

Re: Waterpump?
A factory 72 truck should have the short water pump. Is your alternator on the driver or passenger side?

Re: Waterpump?
Look at the illustration I posted it gives the sizes of the two types run a tape along side yours and see...it's either 5 5/8" short or 7" long. Your year truck should have short.

Re: Waterpump?
All of the 67-72 trucks with a Small Block Chevy 283 thru 350 had short water pumps. You can get new water pump bolt kits either online or at an auto parts store. Just tell them you have a short water pump.

Re: Waterpump?
looking at his pic of the water pump on his engine there are spacers between the pump and block (iirc moroso made these)
he can run the short pump and spacers but thats 2 extra gaskets and 2 more places to leak.. or a long and toss the spacers look at his pic's and the part withing the black marker.. if he runs the short pump without the spacers nothings going to line up, |

Will a better pic of the water pump help clear up the short vs long issue?
