put the a/c back on my truck; do I need to do anything to it?

I have been working on my truck and haven't run it in a year. I put the factory A/C compressor back on and have it all hooked up. Is it ok to run the truck with the a/c system dry? What needs to be done to charge the system? Thanks!

maybe leave the compressor unplugged till you have it charged. At least thats what Vintage air recommends.

If the a/c clutch isn't engaged you wouldn't do any damage to the compressor. You should check the oil level in the compressor before installing it. Whoever does the re charge should put the system on vacuum for at least a half hour to remove any moisture that may be in the system and they can add oil and dye with the a/c machine before charging the system but it's impossible to tell how much oil is already in it. There usually is oil trapped elsewhere in the system but it needs the freon to circulate it.
