62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

I have recent bought a 1962 Suburban 1/2t 4x4 which looks to be factory. It was my understanding that GM did not do this and all 4x4's of this year where done buy Napco. Anybody have some info to clarify what I have bought?

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

If your burb is a 1 ton then it would have been a napco, otherwise 1/2 ton dana 44 up front with rockwell transfercase. Starting in 1960 all 1/2, 3/4 tons were gm, anything bigger was a napco. But someone could have put a napco axle under yours, usually the axle has napco stamped into it on the front of axle

they never had either 3/4 or 1t burbs so we don't have to worry about that; 133"w/b panels were the only thing larger than a 1/2t in that body style
Napco in a 62 suburban- not impossible but highly improbable. you could have also have gotten the required pieces from GM

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

All the mounts for the springs are what appears to be factory rivets and there is no holes for the original 2wd cross member. So, I'm thinking whith the imput from you guy's this must original from GM. My next question is how rare is it? The body is very solid and complete. It actually runs and drives and has a early 350 chevy in it. The drive train is otherwise looks to be 100% original. Any base ideas of value? Thanks!

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

I have no idea on whether what you have is original or not , but is it not possible that the entire chassis has been fitted with an earlier body at some point ?

Not trying to piss on your bonfire , but its worth a thought ...

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

Yes that is an original 4x4 Suburban. I see someone has converted it over to a V8, not sure how well that was done. It looks to be on overall good shape, except for the butcher job on the dash. Not sure what the PO has going on there with the heater controls and such

It was originally a 235 truck. The motor mount cross member is way to far forward for a V8. It has some rinky dink mounts to bolt the engine in. Also found the original owners manual and operation manual for the original Dana/Spicer hubs.

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

thks. I can see now. the x/member should be further back and the mounting goes thru where the bolt is located on either side. they used the same mounting as the old 265s in the 55-56 cars and trucks

Re: 62 Sub factory 4x4 or not

Looks to be in pretty good shape, i am looking for some pics of v-8 on how they mounted in the front of engine. I think the mount on yours would have been on the backside of your crossmember for the u shaped mount for v-8
