Parking brake question(s)
Greetings all, I just ran into a new problem trying to get my 56 inspected. Seems I need a parking brake! My truck has a 76 rear axle with NO PB cables, the originals are both cut off, the forward cable also cut, no nothing inside the truck. I have no idea what it's supposed to look like, pedal or handle, or where it mounts and how it is run. I've looked at trucks on ebay trying to figure it out, but most of them don't look like they have them either. I saw a sketch in the LMC catalog that leads me to believe it is a dash mounted lever, with a rod probably going through where the new wiring harness is, to some kind of swivel that I have no idea where goes, probably on the frame horns for the transmission mounts that were also cut off. The lever in the middle is still there (with three cut off cables attached) and a pulley on the frame by the master cylinder. If I can get rear cables in order, I can probably mount a handle between the seats, but it is only about a foot away.
SO, does anyone know if the original 56 cables will work in a 76 rear end, or do I need to get 76 cables and somehow get them to fit in the 56 apparatus, or do I have to do the whole thing from scratch? Thanks! Craig |

My local NAPA guy let me use his brake cable reference book to look up the cable for my truck. I'm not sure what the foot pedal is from but all I actually needed was a good description of the ends I required and his book referenced the different lengths of cables available.

if it all gets overwhelming, and all you need is a parking brake NOT an emergency brake, then you might consider a pinion brake, mounts to the rear universal... with a simple pull lever to engage. looky here!

Another modified Task force, gotta love them mods.

There should be a handle right under the dash just to the left of the steering column that does lay horizontally. If you don't have the handle it might be easier to get a pedal from a later model vehicle and use it. Check out OrrieG's build thread to see an example. If it were me, I'd remove all traces of the original setup, including the frame pivot bracket and check out www.controlcables.com. It's what I did on my 57 and I now have cable from the handle to the rear wheels. My total cost was about $175. There is probably cheaper ways of doing it with junkyard parts but this is how I did it.
