Cool New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

Hows it goin guys. Im a new guy to this forum, as well as trucks in general. Ive been a Jeep guy since i was 16(almost 21 now). But the Jeep thing got stale for me and now i drive a stock Cherokee til i can find my next vehicle.

Ive been considering my dads old 76 Chevy. I think i was only 10 when he bought it but i remember goin to pick it up with him. We had some great times in it. I learned to drive in it actually. He replaced the engine in 04 or 05 i think, with an Edelbrock 350 crate motor, which hauls ass(to me) lol. Its a 2wd, auto tranny, Scottsdale 20 trim level. The whole front end is basically new ie tie rods, ball joints etc. Itd probably need new tires, as well as a hefty tune up since its been sitting for over a year. Anyways, I could probably buy it off him for 1000 bucks or so.

Thats close to how it looks now, that was back in 07 on a camping trip. Its got a lil more rust, has some different wheels on it etc.

If i were to buy it id like to lower it a small amount, but i dont think i wanna slam it to the ground i still wanna be able to haul stuff if need be without scrapin lol. And id probably throw some steelies or mags on it. I think itd be awesome as a summer cruising vehicle. Id love to paint it, but thats far down the road if at all. Apparently it gets 11 mpg, but hey, when i had my jeep lifted i was gettin 13 so eh, im used to crap mileage.

Basically what im lookin for from you guys, is some inspiration for its future. As in some pictures of some same body style trucks lowered, as well as how much work/money would i have to spend to lower it right, as well as fix some rust spots, mainly tailgate, rocker panels etc.

Sorry for sounding so scattered but its hard to condense everything i wanna know in this post. I hate sounding like a noobie. I know so much about jeeps and lifting them but when it comes to lowering things, especially older trucks i know squat lol. Well anyways, thanks guys.

We were all noobies at one time or another so don't worry about, welcome to the board. There is a thread that has nothing but long beds, you'll get some great ideas there and others will chime in also. As for me I'd lose the camper and restore it back to stock, but hey thats just me.
Welcome again

Re: New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

That is a great truck and a great price. The fact that it comes with memories makes it even better. I would get the truck and get it in top notch mechanical shape. Drive it for a while and look at lots of pictures. The combination of interacting with the truck and looking at other trucks should give you more inspiration than you have time and money to satisfy.

Welcome Aboard !

Looks like a pretty solid rig to start with and knowing the history makes it even better, The price to lower depends on how low you want to go. Just a slight drop can be done for under 200 bux.....

For the price of the truck I'd keep the XJ as well, I wouldn't wanna have to choose between my trucks and XJ cuz I like them both.

The history of it is one reason why i am into it in the first place. I just think itd be awesome to keep it in the family and work on it with my dad. He actually has a 48 ford pickup as well thats been passed down from my grandfather that i would love to restore one day as well.

And good to see im not the only xj owner on here.

Re: New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

You can still do a 4/6 drop and haul stuff with it. Just get an air over leaf system and you will have full hauling capacity. Welcome to the forum btw. (from bothell)

Re: New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

Small update...I can actually pick up the truck for $850 if i want. Im tryin to decide between this truck and an 82 blue 4wd, 3" lift, no rust for $2000. My lifted truck roots are holdin me up on this one lol.

Im goin to look at both this weekend. Theyre both owned by the same guy. Basically a family friend/family mechanic and my dads friend. My dad sold the 76 to him awhile ago when my dad got a new truck so thats who id be buyin it from actually.

I cant really decide which one to buy. I could buy the 76 and have money leftover for mods, or spend what i have on the 82. Apparently the 82 runs better and has no rust, which the 76 has its fair share of. Rust kinda scares me since ive never tackled it. Hmm...

Re: New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

Rust ain't too bad! Hell thats all I deal with up here. Theres tons of information about rust repair, and as long as you can get metal and weld, you'll be golden.

Re: New guy here...thoughts on this truck?

I've been doin some reading on C20's and apparwntly its harder to find lowering parts for em? I tried lookin up parts but only see stuff for C10's. And the 20 stuff I doin find is crazy expensive. I only really feel like buying this thing if I'm gonna lower it. I don't really wanna drive it just stock.

Putting 1/2 ton coils in the front & 1/2 ton leafs in the rear will lower it, And make it ride better.
