Re: gas mileage?

I don't know about miles per gallon, but I get a lot of SMILES per gallon.
If your serious about it though, it depends on a lot of things
1) rear gear ratio
2)rear tire size
3) 2 or 4 barrel carb
4) auto-stick-or overdrive trans
5)how heavy your right foot is
if I get 10-15 I feel lucky,I am putting in a 700r4 next week should help

Arrow Re: gas mileage?

10 to 12 miles to the gallon on High Test gas.
Price to pay to be a Gear Head.
10:1 compression.
Most of the gas stations has 10 to 20% Ethanol mixed in with the gasoline which decreases the fuel mileage.

FYI guys with this Ethanol mixture in the gas eats away at the fuel lines.
That's why I ran steel fuel lines. They say you need to change the rubber fuel lines 3 to 5 years. The newer vehicles have teflon in them.
They know how to look out for us don't they

Re: gas mileage?

I run 100 octane from an ethanol-free station (shhhh), and get about 8mpg city. I think it might possibly be connected to my heavy right foot though. I got 16mpg with my 283.

Talking Re: gas mileage?

Did you get it at SUNOCO gas station?
I seen one in Gaffeny SC that sold SUNOCO BLUE OCTANE RACE FUEL.
http://www.buyracegas.com/search.asp...chValue=leaded
The local drag strip near me sells race gas there.
Unfortunately I can't run anything higher Octain due to the foam thats in my fuel cell.

Re: gas mileage?

Yup. There's a Conoco that sells it across the street from my office ($7.00/gal) or I can get it from an independent for $5.78/gal if I want to drive an extra 10 minutes. Found them on www.pure-gas.org

Re: gas mileage?

My '66 short Fleet has a stock '62 327 with a 2-barrel and dual exhaust. 4.11:1 gears and a Tremec 5-speed. The odometer doesn't work, but the gas mileage doesn't seem to be that bad. I'd guess 13 low-17 high and that's on E-10 regular.

Re: gas mileage?

With my fleetside 1/2 ton, 2WD, I can get 20 mpg on the freeway if I stay at or below 70, turning between 1800-2000 rpm. That's with a 350, Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, 700R4 trans, and 3.73 rear gears. If I get into the secondaries, or just around town, it drops down to around 12-15.

1,800 - 2,000 RPM is the sweet spot for getting the best gas-mileage with a carb. No matter what your gearing if you hold this range you'll get your best mileage on the highway.

Re: gas mileage?

Depending on how I behave, I probably average between 14-18 mpg and I'm running a 350, Richmond 4 speed and 4.10 rear gears. Almost all of my driving is around town going 35-50 mph. 70 mph freeway driving would drop it into single digits, so it’s really important the truck be set up for how it is going to be used.

Re: gas mileage?

If you are looking for good mileage you really can't beat on overdrive tranny. Check out this video of the Hot Rod Magazine "Crusher Camaro".. it's a big block with a blower... with 650 HP it gets 9 mpg and that includes cruising 75 mph at 2200 rpm.

Here is a link to the video... go to 6 min. 18 sec. :

Re: gas mileage?

I am getting a true 17 mpg in my 65 (LS2 - T56) with a mix of highway and urban. (I have carefully calibrated the odomoter with the ECM) I expect to get about 18 this summer (better in warm weather for some reason, air density?).

I have essentially the same motor and trans in my Vette with exactly the same gearing and it gets a true 21 mpg over the same route. It is amazing to me that aero? makes 4 mpg difference.

Man, that is awesome! It makes me want to go grab an LS motor. How much of a pain was it to do the install and all the wiring?
