55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
Hi Guy's, I'm hopeing to take advantage of the Brothers truck sale that ends at the end of this month.
I need a new floor mat for my 56 GMC, there are two options rubber or vinyl? What is the difference apart from the obvious, & which is better?? |

I just put a new rubber mat in my '58. I like the way it turned out. It lays nice and flat. Also seems to clean up good. I got mine from classic parts of America.

Re: 55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
Rubber will stay flexible and keep its shape over time. Vinyl will out gas and become hard and brittle. I always spec rubber base, stair treads and single ply roof membranes (EPDM) over plastics, I know how it will behave and last. Before this build I ran rubber mats in my TF for 25 years only having to replace it twice while using it as a daily driver.

Re: 55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
Hi fella's, I'm bringing up an old thread that I started back in the day. I ended up purchasing a rubber floor mat back in 2011 to suit my flat floor application. Stupid me didn't count on needing to swap out the standard flat trans cover to a repop humped 4sp type, due to th400 clearance issues.
Question is, what are the chances the rubber floor mat will fit the humped floor if anyone knows? I hate blowing money & I don't wan't to cut a hole in it when it can't be used. Not in the picture but I now have the shifter all bolted in, I guess I should have tried it beforehand.

The flat mat will probably be too short. Lay it in there and have a look.

Definitely go with the rubber. Bought mine from Brothers, it fit perfectly and it looks great.

Classic Industries, Ecklers, LMC, Brothers, Jim Carter--they should all have it

It seems that the period correct 55-59 rubber floor mat for standard 3sp is readily available but I'm having trouble trying to locate the humped 4sp type.

Re: 55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
I got this one from Bow Tie Bits. I don't know exactly what an original looks like so don't know how close this one is. It's probably the same as the other vendors sell. This was when I was installing it and I had to cut it slightly to make it fit around the Lokar gas pedal and lay flat.

Re: 55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
Yeah I sent one back exactly like that one. It isn't even close to original.
This isn't the best picture, but this looks like it is correct. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/appli...?aid=53&ln=713 click on the interior photo. Last edited by dicer; 07-18-2013 at 06:26 AM. |

Re: 55-59 Rubber or Vinyl Floor mat?
I bought mine from Golden State Pickup Parts in in California in about '95. The three speed mat had the correct pattern for the truck. Just like this one in the picture from the link above.
It came with knockouts for all the pedals and the foot starter but IIRC didn't have a cutout for the four speed trans or the dimmer switch. I laid the mat over the trans with the shifter removed in order to mark the location of the shifter hole. Same for dimmer switch. I've got jute insulation with an aluminum heat barrier under the mat and even with the extra thickness it fit over the hump without looking funny on the edges. I thought it was spendy, but they claimed lifetime warranty on all rubber parts so I figured I'd own it long enough to get a free replacement. Looks like part no is U-60. There's no picture on the web site so I'd probably contact someone there before buying one. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000119c Edit: Just noticed the split bench in the picture. That's cool! Is that's a Suburban only part? Last edited by 1project2many; 07-18-2013 at 07:52 AM. |
