New shop truck project...
[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][IMG][/IMG][/IMG]
I just traded an old parts truck for this old barn find! It actually still runs after sitting for 20 years. I'm not sure which way to go with it yet and have been kicking some idea's around and wanted to know what everyone thinks...My first idea was to leave it a "patina" truck and maybe add some door logo's (does anyone remember my Forest Service truck I did last year?) probably blast the stock wheels and add some white walls, something along those lines anyway...next idea is to leave the body and paint as it is but drop it and put some large diameter wheels on it...last idea was to prime it and pinstripe it? I have really fallen in love with the original faded paint, dings, dents etc...and I just can't decide what to do because once I prime it or something I ruin what took mother nature fifty years to create...Please give me idea's or suggestions on this one! |

DON'T TOUCH THE PAINT OR BODY, That is what dreams are made of. Just bag it, steelies and dog dish hub caps and white walls. Then that truck will be sick.

Re: New shop truck project...
Good to see you're gonna keep the patina, you can imitate it but you can't duplicate it.

Re: New shop truck project...
I'd hit it with some CLR and then a layer of clearcoat. New tires and some chrome steelies and she'd be ready to roll. And PLEASE keep that hood. I think they are perfect.

Great truck and love the 1960 hood. Keeping the patina as is allows you to simply enjoy the ride and not worry about taking it anywhere. I think the wipers may need some attention though.

Re: New shop truck project...
i agree with keeping the patina...like said, there's just no way to duplicate it...one thing that i've always wondered though is this:
many patina trucks have that awesome weathered look, but some have fared better than others...some are pretty solid, while others have gaping rust holes...do you try to fix those holes & chance ruining the patina look, or do you just roll with the holes? |

Re: New shop truck project...
I agree, just CLR the body and add fresh wheels. I like the current trend of bigger wheels with stock caps too.
I hate to be the one that goes against the grain, but I do not see the attraction to the 60 hoods. If I were to change anything on the body, I would have to replace the hood.

Re: New shop truck project...
Nice truck, very cool, nice score.
Gotta side with N2trux though in regards to those 60-61 hoods. I have come to realize that just 'cause it's old stylin' doesn't mean it's good stylin'. I wonder who at Chevrolet though big oval openings belonged on a Chevy? ... a Ford maybe, but not a Chevy. Last edited by lakeroadster; 05-13-2011 at 11:30 AM. |

Re: New shop truck project...
Im gonna leave the truck as is, and yes, I am keeping the "cat eye' hood. That hood is my favorite part of these trucks. I have had several of these trucks and I just love the hood design! This weekend has been spent cleaning it up and next weekend will be tuning it up and then I will post some pics of the progress! Keep the idea's rolling and maybe I will be driving this more soon than later!
Thanks everyone! |

Re: New shop truck project...
Thats not patina, thats just plain old rust. The sooner youre rid of it, the better off you will be. I wouldnt be able to sleep if my truck had that kind of finish. I say: Get ready to sand and paint. And stock height is the right height.

Re: New shop truck project...
yes, what did you do?!
My vote is to paint the hood inserts, grill, front bumper, and wheels all white. drop it like 5/6" with meaty whitewalls on the back. and update the rear bumper to something more modern... then in the bed, build you a tool box you can work out of... |

Re: New shop truck project...
How did you guys get this way? Patina used to be a little primer showing through the top layer of paint- not rust. Putting clear over the rust will not stop its progress. Andyspinstriping should do something to preserve that hood rather than subjecting it to the slow death that rust will provide. Id like to see the trucks of all you guys and see if you really have your money where your mouths are. Furthermore, if you lower that truck into the weeds as you all seem to want, it will look like a derelict and probably be carted off by the local police. Now Im assuming that Andy has a pinstriping business and maybe even an auto body shop. Is this really the image you wish to portray? I wouldnt have that truck in my driveway. My neighbors, who are not too thrilled with me now, would come after me with pitchforks.
