Should i jump on this truck?
I know a friend of my dads sellin this 82 Chevy. Its a 3/4 ton long bed 4x4 with a 350 and a th400. Havent seen it up close in person, but from the pics the interior looks great. No cracks on the dash, seat has been recovered recently. The motor has been rebuilt recently, under the hood looks pretty good. The body is super straight, no rust. Paint is faded but i think if i polish it up it will look pretty good for what i want. I guess its got a 3 inch lift on it right now. I'd leave it as is unless its a body lift. Once i go take a look at it ill know for sure. Obviously i know it needs an air cleaner lol. Hes askin 2200 for it but i probably will get him to 2000. What you guys think? Worth it? Oh and heres some pics.

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
Seems a little high to me, but...I'm kind of a cheap bastard. 1000-1500 is more like it or at least what I'd be willing to pay, but YMMV.

That's a great deal for $2,000,if it's as described and how it appears in the pictures. Last time I checked a rebuilt engine costs $1000-1500.

I dont know about the rest of the country, but here in the south a rust free straight truck like that would bring at least $3500. That being said, Make sure its a true 3/4 ton, 14b full-float rear! Being an 82, its prob not a 44 front and a lot of the 80's trucks had semi-float 14b's. They aren't bad rearends per-say, but it would drive the value way down for me. I'd say either way it worth the 2 grand though, if it runs good and seems dependable. Just dont ruin it w a body lift please. |

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
It's just amazing to me the amount of squares built and the fact that people think they'r worth a mint. I understand that engine rebuilds affect total cost, but maybe it's just a truck to some people. Best of luck with the truck if you get it, I don't have anything against it. I just wouldn't pay for it.
Then again, maybe I should have quoted or emphasised on the "cheap bastard" statement!!!

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
$2k isn't a lot of money and that looks like a pretty clean unmolested truck. It seems almost too clean. Bodywork? Its not the best grille/headlight style, but still...
I prefer 3/4 tons and 4x4s so I may be biased. |

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
If it's as straight and solid as it look in the pictures that is a steal at $2,000.

Also, unless I know the person, I am always rather skeptical when they claim that "the motor has been recently rebuilt". Been burned too many times on that one. Last edited by Redcap; 05-15-2011 at 03:16 PM. |

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
Bottom line is, if you like the truck and think it's a good deal/can live with the price...go for it.

I agree with that. A "recently rebuilt" motor means nothing to me. I rule that out when looking at the truck because I don't know anything about it. So for me it's everything except motor unless it's a target master "showing my age here". You can pick up a motor for a dime a dozen. So to me it's sheet metal, chassis, and axles. So if you think that truck is worth 2 grand to you and you think the truck is good. Then go for it and be happy. |

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
i wish nice square bodies we're going for less than 2k i'd buy them left and right but i see nothing but terrible rusted out 1/2t mud trucks going for 3k+, assuming its actually nice in person and nothings wrong i think its worth it but i guess it depends on the person

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
Looks like a clean, plain Jane truck. No A/C, rubber mat, vinyl seat.. Oh and it is a body lift, can tell by the gap between the front bumper and the body. If the body is straight and it runs good I think it's a screaming deal, but that's just me. It will likely have a 9.5" SF rear and 10 bolt front. Not a great drive train if you're trying to build something stout, but fine if you're just going to cruise around and tow a boat or haul wood.

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
Looks like its in pretty great shape inside and out. If it was me and I had the money and wanted it I would probably do it. At least its from someone you know and it does have the rebuilt motor already.

Re: Should i jump on this truck?
Yup, $400. And scrap is $.09/lb here. A fullsize truck with a motor goes for about $450. I just scrapped 2 Fords.
