What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
It was another bsuy week for my truck . Monday morning I started by taking my grinder and cutoff wheels and squaring off the heads of the bed bolts on my truck. I knew the bed was shot and i had bought a replacement bed from craigs list. Once i got the bed off my son and i dedided to wire brush off some of the rust on the frame and we noticed the top of the frame on the upper rail was rotted pretty badlu. One of my new neighbors happened by and he is an old chevy fan. He handed me some quarter inch steel and told me to make repair panels and he would weld them in so back to work with the grinder cutoff wheel and some drills i went.
Last week i had ordered some tie rod ends and a idler arm so while i was doing the fabrication my son and his friend muscled out the old parts and threw them on along with new shocks all around. I didnt like the look of the control arms and the front springs , not to mention that the truck made all kinds of clangs when you drove it so we ordered upper and lower control arms complete and cargo coils. I wasnt about to attempt the control arms without air tools so i made arrangements to get the truck to the shop on friday for that. Years ago when i first got the truck the windshield was cracked. I figured why not take care of this too while i was at it so i had the mobile glass guy change out the windshield for $210 dollars. Tuesday we had the fellow weld on the panels that i made for both sides of the chassis and we also made some quarter inch spacers for the rest of the bed. I had a couple of guys come by after work and we put the new bed on. Tuesday night was cruise night so i took a chance and me and the wife drove the truck to the track and ran her once against a buddys ford... we wont get into the results of that.. Later this week i had the new control arms installed and decided to go for a set of tires on the front so all the rubber is new and now the truck rides nice. While in the auto parts store i decided to also buy a chrome differential cover and that was also installed, and the rear end serviced. I also replaced the old rear view mirror with an aftermarket that hopefully wont shake at highway speeds.. Im debating on pulling the somewhat tired 305 and getting a crate 350 from Jegs and throwing that in with the headers and true dual exhaust Im hoping after the first of the month to start on the body work.. if progress keeps up like this i may actually be done with this truck before the end of summer.. How about you all?

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
ok so i dropped my transmission in my truck and put in a new throwout bearing and it still did not work!!! uGH!! so since i have no clue what this transmission came out of i decided to pull the transmission out of my burban and ill put that one in and not have to guess about what parts to get i just pulled the body off with a tractor ( the burban was rolled ) so i could scrap the body and keep the motot and trans and axles cuz their all still solid my had is pretty swollen cuz i was pushing on the wrench with all i had trying to break the body mounting bolts loose when it did break loose and i punched the frame but im good then pulled the frame home mother wasnt too happy

I didn't get the lawn mowed
But I did find time to put my rear bumper on. But this truck was supposed to be growing into a stepper. Now I'm not sure. |

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
I drove it to the house. It had been stored at moms since the wedding a year ago, with the engine in but not totally connected and timed. A buddy and I got that fixed up and it made it here with no issues. Ive still got to track down a trans leak, and plug up a few ports properly, and finish reinstalling the interior. Oh and switch the bed... and do alot of other things. Its far from finished lol

Well, I sprayed my driver door jamb, for rattle can it came out decent. closed under cluster ac vent for an cleaner look, and since I never had the line it was pointless. other vents freeze cab anyway. But you had a pretty good week. I rarely do anything to my truck anymore, kinda burned out.

I picked my 83 up Friday, got rid of the tool box, started cleaning up the interior and tore the glove box lock apart to get it replaced. Not much else as I have been working on some other steel related projects.

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
Made more progress on my 50, changed out the bed sides and finished some welding on the rear frame section. The bed sub-floor is now 90% complete along with the transmission X-member.
A brief walk-around..............

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
saturday i didnt do a WHOLE lot...however....today i went on a car cruise for a guy who lost his battle with cancer in January and owned many perfectly done, high dollar street rods and/or customs. It was def. a somber time as we all cruised right to his grave site and did a small "ceremony" of types and then went to his house to see some other vehicles he had.

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
Finally finished removing 30 years of old pasture fence, posts, barb wire and some trash trees. Now we are on the list for a local company to come out and install all new wooden post and high-tensile fencing. He has the equipment that hydraulically drives wood posts in the ground so looking forward to seeing that operation and the new fence. Glad to get away from that barb wire.
Rained Saturday so a trip to the local John Deere dealer for annual parts. Took time to refresh the mower with an oil change and blades and a wax and shine on it as well. Hate to see it get dirty now. Meanwhile the never ending saga continues as I work on hauling wood in preparation for our next winter supply along with some to sell. Made another run to the woods today. Will be running loads like this all summer as time allows. Set a goal for a 100 ricks by Christmas...will see how that one goes being a one man operation with more than one iron usually in the fire. Yet this is really why I bought this truck, to work, haul wood and anything else we need move around. So far so good and always enjoy the road time in it! It is nice to have a dash again. Mark .

Re: What did you get done 5/15/2011 edition
Pulled about 30ft of 18awg wire out from underneath my Mom's '79 314 John Deere mower...
Other then that I did some looking at my truck. I am using some what I believe to be F-Body Flowtech Afterburner headers. They fit great, and tuck up under the truck great, but the bell crank arm that the rod to the fork connects to runs RIGHT into the header. But if I cut the piece off, and move it over it'll clear, and I can still use the original adjustable rod. I also have been doing a ton of research for my diesel build.Got my air issue handled, and the block issue handled. Currently figuring out a lack of fuel issue...

Finished tearing down the engine for the project truck. I was looking for answers but I found questions instead.
