New Guy Here

My first post on the site. I have been an avid El Camino enthusiest for years. I have always wanted a "new" older 2nd Gen chevy/GMC truck. I am in the "research" mode at this point, trying to get myself educated with this new quest and the technical terms associated with these older trucks. My goal is to purchase a sound 67-72 locally (S. AZ) and build/restore it to a "like new" condition with modern upgrades. I think my biggest initial concern is that the truck will end up a 4X4. So my 1st question is:

Is it reasonable to buy a good 2WD and add the transfer case and front axle assembly? It appears there are LOTs of resources and aftermarket companies out there for these vehicles.

Looking forward to picking everyones brains for help on my project.
