Best frontend option
Hey guys..
I have a buddy who wants to upgrade his frontend. He has a 1953 chevy with a 6 cylinder. He has it low and wants to keep it low. I was thinking a mustang II.. But I really don't much about this frame and want to get him the best deal out there and know you guys can help. Thanks!! Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Best frontend option
There are several great choices for front suspensions. An aftermarket front stub or a donor stub are good choices but, require a decent amount of fabrication and welding. The Mustang II is a good choice also. It retains the stock core support and bumper mounting locations and is less labor intensive. I would probably steer you toward the MII unit. I would ask the vendor if their crossmember can be raised into the frame a couple of inches. This allows for a low ride without dropped spindles and also gives you more ground clearance of the crossmember. Lowered trucks are WAY cool, but are kind of goofy if they can't drive over a soda can without hitting it. Check with some of the vendors on this site----Scott's Hod Rods is an active member here.

You will have a choice of three style of frontends we make for your truck. 1.Scotts standard ifs comes with adj coil-overs 2.Scotts superslam ifs comes with airbags 3.Scotts shockwave comes with a shockwave from Ridetech For your ride height you are after we can set this up in our front suspension when we build it for your truck if you have a specific ride height you are after. Re: Best frontend option
Scotts if he can weld and fabricate a bit. On the other end of the Mustang II spectrum is the bolt on crossmember such as this one by Chassis Engineering http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/chevy-f...1948-1954.html On that one a couple of guys who can measure and drill holes in the right places can have a front suspension on one of these trucks in a day pretty easily. You have to buy an A arm kit or buy the oem style pieces from a wrecking yard or supplier but it is about as simple as things can get. There is everything in between from the 200 dollar bend it an weld it yourself crossmember from Welders Series to the "universal" ones to the complete hub to hub ones. But Scott always seems to be available to answer questions and that alone is worth quite a bit. Nothing is worse than buying from a vendor because the adds in the magazines were pretty or the price beat the competition and then find that you can't get a straight answer when you need one.
I've run a Camaro subframe in the past but don't like to see guys without a lot of fabricating experience attempt to install one unless he has some experienced help. It's a lot easier to get things wrong than to get them right most of the time. Plus you end up doing a lot of modifications to the front inner sheet metal to get things to fit and that in it self is the living pits. |

Re: Best frontend option
I am new to this forum thing so smack me on the hand if i don't do it right.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/i...lies/imnew.gif I went with the MII but, ...... I did have a pro install as I just bought my welder and was not confident enough yet to take a crack at it. I think the results are alot cleaner and you have way more options with the MII. I bagged mine, but as for height i guess it also depends what your doing out back also. Got mine from full tilt suspensions in-expensive, super nice, quick response time, and they even modified the rear four link i bought since I have a long-bed. With stock spindles I am sitting an 1 1/2" from running board brackets to the ground... air out. |

Re: Best frontend option
We like Scotts Hot Rod suspension it fits and the coil overs are adjustable.
Very little welding as this kit is made for your truck not a universal X-member like so many others

Re: Best frontend option
I got a chance to tour Scott's Hot Rod shop last December and must say what a stand up guy. Not only did he answer some questions I had but he showed my around the shop stopping at each project to talk about it.
Saw a few IFS setups and the quality was outstanding. When the time comes for getting a IFS for my truck it will be a Scott's. I was concerned being a 3/4 ton truck and frame slightly different then a 1/2 ton that the cross member would need some modification. Justin said the cross member would be setup to fit my truck and specifications, kinda hard to beat that...Eric

Re: Best frontend option
solidaxle how low will that go with the adjustable coil overs? I am def leaning towards an IFS for my OG frame I have. been hearing good things about scotts. There is a lot of this talk over on the hamb, but damn I can't stand peoples comments over there. Here is so much more relaxed and helpful.
I kind of want to bag my OG frame, but I am just not to that point yet. So I am sure Scotts have a-arms for the bags and brackets? I never checked out their site so I am going to do that. I think that full tilt kit looks ok too, the Chassis engineering looks nice too. I see them on ebay from a store that is very close to pittsburgh, so if I ever went that route they are 20 min away from me. I like the camaro front clip because there is so much room to deal with, but yeah definitely more work to deal with and in the long run by the time you buy all new tie rods, rotors and ball joints and the work to clean it up. the IFS might be better.
