Same exact truck (ex. 1968 c10 swb) but one has

1. 454 mildly built (400hp) with around 15-20k miles on the rebuild backed by a turbo 350 transmission

2. 5.3l truck motor with around 80k miles on it bone stock backed by a 4l60e transmission.

I'm going to say the 454 because it would last longer, but on the other hand all the gas money you would save it would almost be worth the 5.3. But if it were up to me there would be no question which I would choose and that would be the 454 because I would have so much fun with it and i can only imagine how great that would sound with a magnaflow exhaust on it!

I would say 5.3, but I may be biased. I think alot of people who have the money to buy a truck already done want it to run and drive like a late model truck. Just my opinion though.

Neither. There's several ways to go for powertrain and it doesn't really matter as much as the rest of the truck it's sitting in. Personally,I don't build trucks for resale value. Their not an investment to me. I build them for their value to me. The only thing I see wrong with choice #1 that will hurt it is the TH350. I love that transmission and know they can be built to take all you can give them. But,in general,it's turn-off to me when I hear BBC/TH350. I can't really explain it,but I'd really have to know a lot about the truck (& trans build) to feel good about that. I like that they rob less HP.

personally the 4l60 would be the deciding factor for me...would run from it so I vote the 454

^^5.3 for sure. It can make more POWER, get BETTER mpg's and not to mention when dressed up right looks apart.

Lots of variables here. I am prejudiced though as we are doing a 68 swb with a 454. 5.3 engines are pretty smooth though.

depends , do you want a torque monster or an slightly more reliable, modern cruiser? do you like the old school look or modern ? looks wise id say the 454 , if you want to be able to drive cross country without issue 5.3 is the way to go.

I vote 5.3l and the 4l60e. not becuase im bias or anything, but the potential to make power with less is greater, fuel mileage would be considerably greater, engine life is much greater (with everything being the same that is.) Iv had both and unless your drag racing to get the best time possible. The 300hp or so from a stock 5.3l, will do a burn out or get off of a stoplight just as well as a 400hp bb maybe even better givin the lower, 1st gear ratios in the 4L60E, and would use less fuel doing it. Then cruise at 65mph, at a nice 1500-1800rpm instread of a screaming 3200-3500 rpm. ( depending on final gear ratio of coarse.) but It all comes back to what you plan on doing with the truck. You Know its each to his own but, I know What I would Choose and have. just my .02

i've been a big blockk fan ever since i stepped into the chevrolet arena. which was bout 35yrs ago. so hands down 454 for me.

I'm going with the 5.3. You really are comparing apples and oranges here. The 5.3 is 325 CID, if you want something a little more comparable, how about a 6.0L (364CID)? Throw a cam in a 6.0 and your going to be at around 500 hp. You also have less weight and the benefits of fuel injection.
